Friday night game recaps

Washington's Roy Helu prepares to be hit during a preseason NFL football game in IndianapolisReuters
We know not everyone was home on Friday night, watching the six preseason games. So we’ll try to summarize what you missed below. You can also check out our review forThursday night’s two games here.
Redskins 16, Colts 3
1. Mike Shanahan may not admit it publicly, but John Beckall but ended the Redskins quarterack competition with a solid performance.
2. The Redskins run game has been one of the stories of the preseason. They dominated for a second straight week, with Tim Hightower andRoy Helu ripping off 50+ yard gains.
3. Colts backup Curtis Painter and No. 3 quarterback Dan Orlovsky both looked awful again, creating some mild panic in Indy. Maybe it’s all a plot to let Peyton Manning know how valuable he truly is.
Ravens 31, Chiefs 13
1. Lee Evans showed what a big impact he could make on the Ravens, catching three passes for 68 yards in limited work.
2. Baltimore did a much better job protecting Joe Flacco than they in the first preaseason game.
3. Chiefs second year player Dexter McCluster looked pretty useful now that he’s primarily a running back. He had 51 yards on eight touches.
4. Chiefs coach Todd Haley doesn’t like running up the score, even in the preseason.
Lions 30, Browns 28
1. It appears that an injury to Lions running back Jahvid Best won’t be too serious.
2. The Lions had nine penalties and trailed 21-13 when their starters left the game.
3. Browns quarterback Colt McCoy continued t0 look sharp, with three first half touchdown passes.  He’s done a nice job creating when the play isn’t there.
4. Detroit’s running game has looked lackluster in successive weeks.
5. Cleveland running back Brandon Jackson left with a turf toe injury.
Dolphins 20, Panthers 10
1. Reggie Bush looked terrific in his Dolphins debut, even showing an ability to run between the tackles.
2. Cam Newton left the door open for Jimmy Clausen to take the starting job, but Clausen didn’t take advantage.
3. Chad Henne enjoyed a strong performance, leading Miami to 17 first half points.  That should quiet any talk about Matt Moore getting snaps with the starting unit.  Moore looked decent too.
4. Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess combined for 10 catches in one half to help Miami control the ball.
Packers 28, Cardinals 20
1. Cardinals rookie running back Ryan Williams will miss the season after rupturing his patella tendon.  Arizona will look for running back depth now.
2. Green Bay’s offensive line struggled again, especially rookie Derek Sherrod.
3. Packers backup QB Matt Flynn lived up to his training camp hype with another great preseason outing.
4. Kevin Kolb had an uneven performance for the Cardinals. They scored six points in his three drives.
5. Cardinals linebacker O’Brien Schofield flashed some pass-rushing skills, which Arizona can desperately use.
Jaguars 15, Falcons 13
1. Blaine Gabbert looked like a rookie. He’ll probably take over for David Garrard during the year, but it’s hard to make the case for Gabbert right now with his YPA under 5.
2. Jaguars rookie receiver Cecil Shorts looks like a keeper. They needed someone to step up in that receiver group and he has.
3. Julio Jones is a huge addition to the Falcons offense, but don’t overlook No. 3 receiver Harry Douglas.  A year further removed from knee surgery, Douglas looks like a big-time weapon. He flashed terrific speed on a 76-yard score.

Pryor turns out a blazing 4.41 forty at pro day

Terrelle Pryor Workout SessionGetty Images
Our source at the Terrelle Pryor Pro Day says that Pryor ran the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds.
That’s not too shabby for a guy who is six-foot-five and weighs 230-plus pounds.
Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that one scout timed Pryor at 4.38 seconds.
He’s running on FieldTurf.  Some players run their Pro Day 40-yard-dashes on a track, which obviously leads to faster results.

Gabbert has shaky performance against Falcons

Blaine Gabbert, Emmanuel StephensAP
We heard this week that the Jaguars starting quarterback competition was legit, which made us start to wonder ifDavid Garrard was the new Byron Leftwich.
That scenario is a little harder to envision after Friday’s action.  Both David Garrard and rookie Blaine Gabbertstruggled against the Falcons, but the rookie’s difficulties were more glaring.
First, the numbers:
Garrard: 7-for-12, 99 yards and a pick.  The Jaguars scored 3 points in three drives with Garrard.  They should have had a touchdown but Garrard missed an easy score on his last drive.
Gabbert: 11-for-23 for 96 yards.  The Jags scored six points in seven drives with Gabbert.  One of the field goals came on a three-and-out, which happened in three drives Gabbert led.
This competition really isn’t about Garrard.  It’s on Gabbert to show he’s ready to lead a team now.  This was his best chance and it didn’t happen. He’s averaging 4.64 YPA through two games.  (For comparison, Jimmy Clausen was last in the NFL with a 5.2 last year.)
While there have been some flashes of promise from Gabbert, we just didn’t see that on Friday night.  Gabbert often felt pressure that wasn’t there. He was hurt by drops, but he generally showed poor pocket presence and shaky accuracy.
This happens for almost all rookie quarterbacks.  That’s why most rookie quarterbacks don’t start right away if there is a solid veteran alternative on the roster.

Neither quarterback impresses for the Panthers

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton takes the field for warmups before his team's preseason NFL football game against the Miami Dolphins in MiamiAP
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he would decide his starting quarterback before next week’s preseason game.
While Cam Newton looks like the favorite for the job, the rookie didn’t make a strong statement Friday night.  Newton completed 7-of-14 passes for only 68 yards in one half of work.
The Panthers didn’t score with Newton at quarterback. Heck, they didn’t get over midfield as Miami dominated possession.  When Newton misses throws, he often misses by a lot.  Two of his out routes were not even close, and he skidded a pass over the middle.
Newton used his legs more, running four times for 18 yards.  He did make some nice throws to his tight ends like last week, but this was a shakier performance than his debut overall.
Lucky for Newton, Jimmy Clausen didn’t do anything to stand out. He completed 9-of-15 passes for 69 yards.  Like Newton, his accuracy and decision making was erratic.  The Panthers scored 10 points with Clausen, but the touchdown came on the ground on a very short field.
If Rivera really does decide his QB next week, the tie figures to go to the No. 1 overall pick.

Ochocinco offers to reimburse Mason Foster if he gets fined by the NFL

Jacksonville Jaguars v New England PatriotsGetty Images
In the first quarter of Thursday night’s preseason game, Buccaneers linebackerMason Foster leveled Patriots receiverChad Ochocinco with a shot to the head. Foster was called for unnecessary roughness and will likely be fined.
But Ochocinco doesn’t think any fine should come. And he feels so strongly about it that he’s offering to pay the fine himself.
In a message on Twitter directed to Foster, Ochocinco wrote, “great hit last night,if u’re fined I’ll reimburse u boss. That’s the way the game should b played.”
Foster replied, “thanks Bruh I appreciate it, good luck to you too.”
I don’t know if Ochocinco’s offer was serious, and I don’t think the NFL would allow such a reimbursement, but it’s a nice gesture from Ochocinco, who doesn’t want the Bucs’ rookie linebacker to lose money on his first paycheck.
