Kubiak raves about rookie rush linebacker Brooks Reed

Coach Gary Kubiak praised rookie OLB Brooks Reed as the one player showing the "most vast improvement from day-to-day, practice-to-practice and game-to-game."
Reed is still transitioning from defensive end to edge rusher, but the early returns are impressive. The second-rounder recorded two sacks, two hurries, and two forced fumbles against the Saints Saturday night. Expected to back up Connor Barwin, Reed's biggest rookie-year impact will come on special teams.

This comes as no surprise, Brooks Reed was touted as a poor man's Clay Matthews, haircut included.  Reed is going to be a great compliment opposite Super Mario.  Especially when he lines up next to rookie stud J.J. Wyatt who has been nearly unblockable this preseason.

Carson Palmer still not officially retired

107687332_crop_650x440Getty Images
With the start of the regular season less than three weeks away, Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer still hasn’t officially retired.
When he didn’t show up for the start of training camp, the Bengals placed Palmer on the reserve/did not report list, a move that potentially exposes Palmer to $30,000 per day in fines.
As a result, Palmer’s $11.5 million salary currently doesn’t count toward the cap, which is irrelevant since the Bengals remain many millions under the spending limit.
The end game for both sides remains unclear.  Palmer possibly hasn’t officially retired in order to preserve his ability to show up on a moment’s notice, if he decides to do so.  By reporting, for example, in the days before the first game of the season, the Bengals would have to decide quickly whether to cut him or to keep him, given that his base salary becomes fully guaranteed as of Week One.
Either way, this thing isn’t over yet.  Otherwise, Palmer would simply file his retirement papers, and move on.

49ers GM Baalke wants to make Gore a Niner for life

Frank GoreAP
49ers running back Frank Gore isn’t happy with his contract.  He’s frustrated regarding the lack of progress on a new deal, and he won’t comment on a PFT report that he could soon request a trade.
Coach Jim Harbaugh has dismissed accounts of frustration and a possible trade request as “water-cooler talk.”  Meanwhile, G.M. Trent Baalke has expressed a strong desire to keep Gore around.
“The best thing we can say is we’re doing everything we can to make Frank a 49er for life and whether that gets accomplished in the near future or not remains to be seen,” Baalke told Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan of SiriusXM NFL Radio.  “But Frank’s a 49er.  He’s a heck of a football player, he’s a heck of a young man, and he’s a leader.  You can’t say enough good things about Frank.”
It all comes down, as it usually does, to money.  And with Gore, who is 29 and who has a lengthy injury history, wanting to be paid like Panthers running backDeAngelo Williams (five years, $43 million, $21 million guaranteed), our own money currently is on the “or not.”

McKinnie to Baltimore is confirmed

Minnesota Vikings tackle Bryant McKinnie blocks Detroit Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch in MinneapolisReuters
The Ravens will sign Bryant McKinnie in an effort to fix their tackle problem.
Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports McKinnie has agreed to a deal.  The Ravenscame close to confirming the report via Twitter. (UPDATE: They confirmed it.)
Through the years, we’ve been fortunate to obtain players late in training camp or just before the start of the season who help us win,” Ravens G.M. Ozzie Newsome said.
This is a fine gamble if the price is low enough. The Ravens looked set to start a right tackle that was cut by the Patriots, so they should have been looking for other options.
A guy as talented as McKinnie who started all last season is worth a try.  The Ravens may move McKinnie to right tackle or possibly move Michael Oher from the blind side so McKinnie can play on the left.
UPDATE: The Ravens confirmed the move, pending a physical.  It’s a two-year deal.  Florio reports via a source that it can be worth up to $7.5 million.  Only $1 million is guaranteed.

Giants lose 2nd round pick Marvin Austin

Marvin Austin
The New York Giants have endured a rough 24 hours.
The team announced Tuesday that second round pickMarvin Austin tore his pectoral muscle.  The defensive tackle will join first round pick Prince Amukamara on the shelf, and Austin is likely out for the season.  (Amukamara is due back in October ideally.)
Austin had impressed onlookers at training camp and was part of New York’s deep defensive line.  Their defensive tackle group isn’t as strong as the defensive ends, though, and this injury makes the gap wider.
The team signed defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy to add depth to the position.

"Unnamed" Broncos official calls Tebow 4th best QB on team

Tim TebowAP
A rough month in the development of Broncos quarterbackTim Tebow is about to get a little rougher.
Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports got some some eye-opening quotes from various members of the Broncos organization that will make waves in Denver.
“If everything was totally equal, and this were a competition based only on performance at this camp, Tebow would probably be the fourth-string guy,” one source told Silver. “Kyle [Orton] is far and away the best, and Tebow’s way behind [Brady] Quinn, too. And I’m telling you, Adam Weber is flat-out better right now.”
Weber, an undrafted rookie, has no chance to actually pass Tebow on the depth chart.  But Weber has looked impressive when given the chance, and Tebow is struggling to work under center or grasp a pro offense.
One Broncos executive says to, “Forget about how [Tebow] delivers the ball, or how accurate it is. First he has to know where to go with it.”
We’re getting to the point that this feels like piling on. It seems clear Tebow has a long way to go, and this Broncos staff may never fully embrace him as the answer.  They see him as a project.
Silver confirms the Broncos were willing to trade Kyle Orton to the Dolphins for a third-round pick in late July.  Receiver Brandon Lloyd called it a “relief” when Orton stayed put.
“Sometimes the best things that happen to you in life are the things that don’t happen,” one high-ranking official told Silver.
The usual caveats apply. Tebow was always supposed to take time.  Through hard work, the Broncos think perhaps he could improve enough to start.
Maybe Tebow will be a succesful starter someday, in Denver or elsewhere.  If that happens, we’ll hear a lot about how Tebow proved the “haters” wrong and overcame some low moments in his career.
It’s hard to imagine it will get much lower than being called the fourth-best quarterback on the Broncos, by the Broncos.

I can't stand the safe "unnamed" sources that derogatory articles are often written with.  Unfortunately in this case it is clearly very true that they really don't care for Tebow in Denver.  You know, the same GM that drafted him a year ago, and placed the entire blame on former coach McDaniel's head.  That is fine, and maybe Tebow is not the best QB on the roster.  Maybe he is the worst of the 4.  I certainly don't know.  I am not there watching the practice reps or anything.  But this is the issue I take with the whole deal.  If you have that much of a problem with the young man, then MOVE ON.  Instead of constantly bashing the guy, move forward.  If he is so terrible, let the guy go.  Yeah so you will take a cap hit, but what does it matter if he is so bad.  At least you won't be wasting a roster spot with the guy, who is the "4th best" QB on the team.

I love Tebow's character and determination to succeed.  I really hope he does become a starting caliber QB, but I have no idea when or if that will happen.  I can promise you one thing though, I will never bet against him.

Chris Johnson to meet with Titans on Wednesday

Tennessee Titans v Seattle SeahawksGetty Images
Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt and owner Bud Adams both said over the weekend that they didn’t even see a point in talking to holdout running back Chris Johnson because the sides were so far apart. But they will talk this week.
Johnson wrote on Twitter today that he and his agent, Joel Segal, will be in Nashville tomorrow to talk to Reinfeldt. A league source confirmed to PFT that Johnson, Segal and Reinfeldt will meet on Wednesday.
“Flying out to Nashville tonight to meet with Joel and the GM in the morning to see which way were going. Could get better or worst,” Johnson wrote.
Meeting in Nashville seems like a step in the right direction. But the fact that Johnson thinks the situation could get worse is another indication that the sides remain far apart.

Albert Haynesworth is back on the practice field today

Albert HaynesworthAP
On the same day that he was supposed to be in a courtroom facing assault charges, Patriots defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is instead on a football field.
Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that Haynesworth, after a 20-day absence, returned to practice.
He showed up in full pads, and he participated in individual drills, jogging from station to station.
Rapoport also points out that he can’t confirm that Haynesworth’s participation in practice caused the D.C. earthquake.  We can confirm, however, that Haynesworth’s presence indeed sparked a hockey game in hell.

Ravens appear interested in LT Bryant McKinnie

Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times is hearing the Ravens are "very interested" in free agent LT Bryant McKinnie.
Jensen is a former Vikings beat writer, so it's no surprise that he'd have sources close to McKinnie. Baltimore's tackles have been a disaster since the first preseason game, and rookie Jah Reid is clearly more developmental project than possible starter. As long as McKinnie has dropped 25-30 pounds, he'd be a worthwhile gamble for the Ravens.

Bill Belichick wants to change or remove extra points from the game

Bill BelichickAP
Patriots coach Bill Belichick recently caused a stir when he said the NFL wants to eliminate kickoffs. Now Belichick has weighed in on a play that he says would be better suited to elimination: The extra point.
In an interview on WEEI, Belichick pointed out that the point after touchdown is so easy that it rarely creates any interest at all, and he said that if the league isn’t going to make it harder, then the league should just get rid of it.
Philosophically, plays that are non-plays shouldn’t be in the game,” Belichick said, via Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com. “I don’t think it is good for the game. Extra points, when you’re up to the 99 percent range in extra points it’s not a play. Let’s move the ball back to the 15-20 yard line and not make it a tap in. Make them kick it. Same thing with the kickoff return, if you’re just going to put the ball on the 20, put the ball on the 20.”
Belichick’s way of thinking makes a lot of sense: The extra point is basically nothing more than a way to give fans a longer bathroom break after a touchdown. And on the rare occasions that an extra point is missed, it’s more about bad luck than skill. Belichick’s solution of moving the line of scrimmage on extra point attempts back to the 20-yard line makes some sense; that would equate to a 38-yard field goal, which isn’t a chip shot.
But we shouldn’t forget about the two-point conversion, which is one of the most exciting plays in football. Under the current rules, the line of scrimmage for point after attempts is the 2-yard line, whether teams are kicking for one point or attempting a two-point conversion. Moving the line of scrimmage to the 20 would only make sense if it’s a rule exclusively for one-point kicks, and two-point conversion attempts still start from the two-yard line.
Another option would be moving the line of scrimmage for all extra points to the 1-yard line. Extra point kicks would still be chip shots, but two-point conversion attempts would be easier, which would encourage coaches to go for two more often, which would make the game more exciting.
The extra point kick could also just be completely eliminated and teams could be given the option of either taking seven points for a touchdown, or taking six points with the chance to go for two and turn it into eight.
In the XFL, there were no extra point kicks. Teams got six points for a touchdown and then ran another play from the two-yard line, and if they scored they got one extra point. That rule might sound like some wacky idea from the mind of Vince McMahon, but it was actually taken from the NFL, which briefly experimented with that rule during its 1968 exhibition games against AFL teams in the preseason. (The World Football League had a similar rule, called the Action Point, in the 1970s.) In the playoffs the XFL changed its extra point rule to allow teams to go for two or three points by moving the line of scrimmage back farther from the goal line.
I’m surprised Belichick, who once sent Doug Flutie into a game to dropkick an extra point, didn’t suggest getting rid of the holder and forcing every team to dropkick extra points. That would make it less of a gimme.
I’ve also heard it suggested that the real way to make extra points interesting is to require the player who scored the touchdown to kick the extra point. It would be amusing to see running backs and wide receivers (and occasionally 350-pound linemen who recovered fumbles in the end zone) trying extra points, and it would encourage coaches to go for two a lot more often.
Don’t expect a radical change to extra point rules any time soon: Any rule change on extra points would require 24 NFL owners to support it, and NFL owners aren’t the most radical of people. But Belichick is right: Extra point kicks are boring plays. The NFL should change the point-after rules to take some boredom out of the game.

I love Belichick's line of thinking here as well.  He is really only bringing this up because of the rule change to the kickoff.  Most of us don't like the change and neither does he.  His point is that if you are going to alter the game, take out some of the stuff that has the least impact on the game, or change it to create an impact.  Some people may say that he is missing the point, because it is all about player safety.  But I don't think he is missing the point at all.  Players get hurt on field goal and extra point attempts too.  Any time players are in motion on the field there is risk of injury.  I too, doubt that any positive change will come from his remarks, but I enjoyed them none the less.

Haynesworth will not be disciplined by the NFL

Albert HaynesworthAP
Commissioner Roger Goodell has said that he doesn’t want a third-party to be able to review his decisions under the personal conduct policy because he doesn’t want to entrust the NFL brand to an outsider.  Perhaps the more accurate assessment is that Goodell wants to be able to make decisions on a case-by-case basis, without concern for the kind of consistency that a quasi-judicial panel would attempt to weave into the broader process of assessing the accuracy of Goodell’s decisions.
Indeed, if consistency means anything, Patriots defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth would be at least suspended for pleading no contest to simple assault, given that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was suspended six games (reduced to four) despite never being arrested or charged with any crime, in his life.
Consistency, for now, means nothing.  According to ESPN, Haynesworth won’t be suspended.
Then again, it’s possible that the NFL has investigated the charges against Haynesworth, and that the NFL has concluded that he truly isn’t guilty.  Under the law of the jurisdiction where the alleged incident occurred, Haynesworth’s lawyer wasn’t going to get a chance to apply the Chewbacca defense on a jury.  Instead, the case was going to be tried to a judge.  Thus, even if the judge had barred from evidence the inflammatory things Haynesworth allegedly said to police or the allegations of an attempt to settle with the alleged victim, the person making the final decision as to innocence or guilt would have known about it.
That said, the prosecution’s case apparently had some holes.  In fact, we’ve heard that the authorities were surprised that a grand jury even indicted Haynesworth in the first place.
So if the league has utilized its security department to investigate the situation, the league possibly (key word:  possibly) has concluded that, despite Haynesworth’s past issues, there isn’t enough evidence to conclude that he did anything wrong in this case.
Finally, don’t discount the possibility that Haynesworth’s lawyers worked the back channels in order to get a feel for the theoretical impact of a no contest plea on Haynesworth’s employment.  Though the league routinely refuses to provide any official information regarding the potential consequences of the outcome of a case, it would be naive to assume that hypothetical discussions don’t happen — especially if there’s a way to handle a case in a manner that minimizes P.R. fallout.
Here, Hayneworth’s decision to cop a plea avoided several days of media coverage of a trial of a high-profile NFL player.  Given that personal conduct policy ultimately is aimed at protecting the shield, a player’s decision to handle his business in a way that advances that outcome should be welcomed by the league.

Dolphins pick up Larry Johnson

Houston Texans v Washington RedskinsGetty Images
The Dolphins may have worked out Clinton Portis on Monday, but it doesn’t look like they’ll sign him.
Instead, they are going for another aging running back that we figured was probably done in the NFL. Miami announced the signing of former Chiefs and Redskins running back Larry Johnson.
Johnson’s star was bright enough that his signing in Washington last year actually made big news.  And then he was only healthy and effective enough to carry the ball five times for Washington.
Johnson turns 32 in November and three teams have given up on him in the last two seasons. It’s hard to imagine him making a big impact in Miami, and it wouldn’t surprise us if he didn’t make the team.
This may be a sign the team isn’t overly happy with rookie Daniel Thomas, who has been tentative around the goal line. The team also cut Kory Sheets Tuesday.
Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald joined PFT Live Monday and made it clear thatReggie Bush, not Thomas, has taken the primary running back role over in Miami.

Steelers reward Lawrence Timmons with $50 million extension

Super Bowl XLVGetty Images
The Steelers, who have been cap-strapped since the new league year began, have found a way to pay another one of their core players.
Linebacker Lawrence Timmons, the team’s first-round pick in 2007, has signed a five-year, $50 million extension, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.  He’s now under contract for six years.
Further details, such as guaranteed money and 2011 cap room, aren’t yet available.  As of last Monday, the Steelers had only $4.4 million in cap space.  The team had restructured several contracts in order to get under the 2011 spending limit.  The Steelers possibly have re-done other deals since then.
Though the 2007 draft will never match the Steelers’ historic 1974 haul of Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, and Mike Webster, the fact that they landed Timmons and LaMarr Woodley in back-to-back selections during coach Mike Tomlin’s first draft isn’t too shabby.

Vernon Gholston blames Rex Ryan for his inability to produce

Rex RyanAP
Vernon Gholston is one of the biggest draft busts in recent NFL history, a No. 6 overall pick of the Jets who was supposed to be a great pass rusher, but who was cut without ever recording a single sack.
So who’s to blame for that? Gholston points the finger at Jets coach Rex Ryan, who according to Gholston was never willing to give him a fair chance to prove himself.
“Being a first-round pick, you would have hoped for more [of a chance],” Gholston told the New York Post. “It’s all about getting a fair shot and time in the system. With the Jets, it was constant position change and coaching change. There was no stability. I never really had that with the Jets.”
Gholston also said Ryan played favorites, and that Ryan perceived Gholston as unpopular in the locker room.
“Rex made a comment to me when he first came in that he thought I wasn’t liked by the guys on the team, then once he got there he saw that wasn’t the case,” Gholston said. “Those perceptions kind of determine the outcome, and it’s sad to say.”
Of course, even if Gholston is right that Ryan had it out for him, that wouldn’t explain why Gholston didn’t play well when Eric Mangini was the head coach. And Gholston is clearly in the minority inside the Jets’ locker room in not being able to get along with Ryan, who has been one of the league’s most popular coaches with his players.
So the fact that Gholston and Ryan didn’t see eye to eye probably says more about Gholston than it says about Ryan.

I can't stand it when people don't own up to their own failures or shortcomings.  And make no mistake about it, this is exactly that type of deal.  When Mangini drafted the work out warrior he had plans for him to play the rush linebacker in the 3-4, but Gholston couldn't make the transition so he never touched the field.

Rex Ryan came in and Vernon already had the bust label on his head.  But I remember Ryan saying that he thought he could still be a good player, but that they would have to wait and see what was there.  It didn't take Sexy Rexy long to decide to move Gholston back to the defensive line.  He was just out of place without his hand in the dirt.  Anyone who watched Hard Knocks with the Jets would remember how during that training camp Rex Ryan had been raving about how he thought Vernon was the most improved player on the squad during camp.  Unfortunately for Vernon and the Jets he was never able to put it all together.  But this one had nothing to do with a big bad bully coach.  Rex would let his grandma rush the passer if he thought she could get the job done.

Monday Night Football Recap: Bears vs. Giants

Terrell ThomasAP
The Bears and Giants wrapped up the second week of the preseason Monday night. The important stuff is below.
Check out our recaps for ThursdayFridaySaturday, and Sunday if you want to catch up on what you missed this week.
Giants 41, Bears 13
1. The Giants lost their best cornerback Terrell Thomas for the season to a torn ACL. It’s a crushing loss for the team, and for a player that is a quiet leader.
Thomas was headed into a contract year and seemed primed for a big season. He’s one of the most underrated corners in the league. The Giants have already lost dimeback Bruce Johnson for the year and first-round pick cornerback Prince Amukamara is out until October. They suddenly look thin in the secondary.
2. Despite the lopsided final score, both the Giants and Bears offensive lines had improved efforts. Eli Manning and Jay Cutler were protected well enough. Giants left tackle Will Beatty got an x-ray on his foot at halftime, but it came up negative.
3. Bears wideouts Roy Williams and Devin Hester looked shaky.  They both had drive killing drops. It’s hard to believe the Bears are benching Johnny Knox.
4. Brandon Jacobs is picking up where he left off last year. He now has 63 yards on 9 carries in two games, including a fancy 18-yard score Monday night. It looks like he’ll get a bigger share of the workload this year.
5. The Domenik Hixon vs. Victor Cruz battle for New York’s No. 3 receiver job continues to be too close to call.
