Andy Dalton outplays Cam Newton

Carolina Panthers v Cincinnati BengalsGetty Images
For one insignificant little preseason game, Cincinnati’s much-maligned rookie quarterback Andy Dalton out-played the No. 1 overall pick of the 2011 draft.
Dalton, the third pick of the second round, completed 11-of-17 passes for 130 yards and touchdown against Carolina in one half of work. Cincinnati’s dominant running game made life easy on Dalton, who actually misfired on a few long throws to A.J. Green or the numbers would have been much better.
Green was the best rookie in this game. He destroyed Panthers cornerback Chris Gamble repeatedly, catching two passes for 45 yards and a score. He had Gamble beat two other times deep but Dalton couldn’t hit him.  Green also had a 11-yard run.
For the third straight game, Cam Newton looked raw and intriguing.  The numbers weren’t pretty: 6-for-19 for 76 yards through the air.  But Newton has avoided a turnover in all three of his outings and he showed off his legs Thursday.
Newton rushed four times for 49 yards, including a 16-yard score where he ran over a Bengals defender. That capped an impressive opening touchdown drive.  His protection failed him for the rest of the night and Newton could only escape so often.  Newton was erratic when he did get protection.
Ready or not, the next time Dalton and Newton play this much will be in Week One.

Tim Hightower looks like a feature back

Tim Hightower looks to be an excellent fit in the zone blocking scheme that the Shanahans are so familiar with.  He is excellent at stretching it out, then planting his foot in the ground and getting up field.  Roy Helu may be on his heels because of his explosiveness, but Hightower is not too shabby himself.

The biggest thing that holds rookies out of the lineups are their pass protection.  I haven't had a chance to see Helu in action, but Hightower is very good in recognition and blitz pickups.

Speaking of blitz pickups, the Ravens Rickey Williams just laid out a blitzing backer a moment ago.  Devastating hit by the veteran running back.

Bears to replace Soldier Field grass with more grass

2011 NFC Championship: Green Bay Packers v Chicago BearsGetty Images
The good news is that the crappy grass surface at Soldier Field finally is being removed.
The bad news is that taking its place will be more grass, which is likely destined to become equally crappy.
ChicagoBusiness.com reports that the Bears and Soldier Field have agreed to replace the current grass field with a new one.  The current sod had been installed only weeks before the Bears had to scuttle an annual Family Fest, thanks to a turf-related clusterfest.
They need to simply install FieldTurf and be done with it.  We continue to believe that the Bears (not the players but the coaches and/or front office) believe that the team derives a strategic benefit from playing on the bad field, since the home team eventually gets used to it.

Raiders come to terms with Terrelle Pryor

Terrelle Pryor Pro DayGetty Images
More than three days after he was selected by the Raiders in round three of the supplemental draft, quarterback Terrelle Pryor has officially joined the team.
Per a league source, Pryor and the Raiders have agreed on a four-year deal.
Pryor is now with the team in California.
We’d heard some scuttlebutt this afternoon that the Raiders had been low-balling Pryor on guaranteed money.  Pryor made it clear during a Tuesday appearance onPFT Live that he’s not really concerned about the money, and so it’s possible that the Raiders tried to use this against him.  Usually, however, the Raiders don’t pinch pennies.

What if Michael Vick were white. . .

By Touré
ESPN The Magazine
Michael VickPhoto illustration by D'arcy Hyde for ESPN The MagazineNo getting around it: Race is still an undeniable element of the Michael Vick story.
This story appears in the Sept. 5 issue of ESPN The Magazine.
WHEN MICHAEL VICK PLAYS, I see streetball. I don't just mean that sort of football where you have to count to four-Mississippi before you can rush the quarterback, nearly everything breaks down and it's all great fun. I also mean street basketball. Vick's style reminds me of Allen Iverson -- the speed, the court sense, the sharp cuts, the dekes, the swag. In those breathtaking moments when the Eagles QB abandons the pocket and takes off, it feels as if he's thumbing his nose at the whole regimented, militaristic ethos of the game.
All of that is why, to me, Vick seems to have a deeply African-American approach to the game. I'm not saying that a black QB who stands in the pocket ain't playing black. I'm saying Vick's style is so badass, so artistic, so fluid, so flamboyant, so relentless -- so representative of black athletic style -- that if there were a stat for swagger points, Vick would be the No. 1 quarterback in the league by far.
Race is an undeniable and complex element of Vick's story, both because of his style as well as the rarity of black QBs in the NFL. A decade after he became the first black QB to be drafted No. 1 overall, about one in five of the league's passers is African-American, compared with two-thirds of all players. But after his arrest for dogfighting, so many people asked: Would a white football player have gotten nearly two years in prison for what Vick did to dogs?
This question makes me cringe. It is so facile, naive, shortsighted and flawed that it is meaningless. Whiteness comes with great advantages, but it's not a get-out-of-every-crime-free card. Killing dogs is a heinous crime that disgusts and frightens many Americans. I'm certain white privilege would not be enough to rescue a white NFL star caught killing dogs.
The problem with the "switch the subject's race to determine if it's racism" test runs much deeper than that. It fails to take into account that switching someone's race changes his entire existence. In making Vick white, you have him born to different parents. That alone sets his life trajectory in an entirely different direction. Thus when this hypothetical white Michael Vick ... wait, I can't even continue that sentence in good faith. I mean, who would this white Vick be? That person is unknowable. When you alter his race, it's like those Back to the Future movies where someone goes back in time, inadvertently changes one small thing about his parents' dating history and then the person starts to disappear. If Vick had been born to white parents, you wouldn't even be reading this right now. That Vick would have had radically different options in life compared with the Vick who grew up in the projects of Newport News, Va., where many young black men see sports as the only way out.
This is not to say there aren't insights to be gained from hypotheticals. One pertinent question: Would a white kid have been introduced to dogfighting at a young age and have it become normalized to the extent that he builds it into his life after he joins the NFL? It's possible, but it's far less likely because what made Vick stand out among dogfighters is less race than class. The deep pockets of an NFL star led to a kennel that was too big not to fail eventually. But if it did, though, would this white kid have been busted? Remember, it wasn't suspicion of dogfighting that started the investigation that put Vick in jail. It was that element that we've all seen hold back or bring down so many athletes from the hood -- the entourage. Vick's cousin Davon Boddie was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell in Hampton, Va. When police asked him for his address, he led them to the home where Bad Newz Kennels was located. After that, Vick never had a chance.
Here's another question: If Vick grew up with the paternal support that white kids are more likely to have (72 percent percent of black children are born to unwed mothers compared with 29 percent of white children), would he have been involved in dogfighting? I ask this not to look for an excuse but to explore the roots of his behavior. Vick's stunningly stupid moral breakdown with respect to dogs is certainly related to the culture of the world he grew up in, which he says fully embraced dogfighting. But it's also related to the household he grew up in.
Vick's father, Michael Boddie, was not a positive influence on him growing up. Boddie admitted to The Washington Post that he was a cocaine user and had been high and drunk around young Vick. He says he often prepared the family garage so Vick could have pit bull fights there. Boddie's account is disputed by a family friend, who says Vick's mother would not have allowed that. Either way, at some point in Vick's youth, his father became estranged from the family. This breakdown of Vick's paternal relationship is a pattern that's all too common among black men of his generation. Too many are left to define manhood on their own, so they gravitate toward the most charismatic and inspiring men in their world. Sometimes those men are gritty local sports coaches who teach them the value of hard work, but sometimes they're ghetto celebrities who are unsavory role models with bad habits.
Ultimately, there is no separating Vick from his circumstances: his race, parents, economics and opportunities. Alter any of those elements and everything about him and how the world sees him would be unrecognizable.
So let's look at him a different way. Let's see him as someone in the third act of the epic movie that is his life, leading a team that many expect to see in the Super Bowl. Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" is playing underneath because the humbled protagonist has finally overcome his personal demons and has begun living up to his athletic promise. And to those who believe we should judge a man by how he responds when dealing with the worst life has to offer -- with how he climbs after he hits rock bottom -- Michael Vick has become heroic.
And that has nothing to do with race.

Grant being outplayed in camp by James Starks?

According to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, James Starks has looked better in training camp "snapshots" than Ryan Grant.
Grant's surgically repaired ankle is no longer an issue, but he's had just a so-so camp, "not bad, not great." Starks, meanwhile, is running with "more decisiveness and more power" along with improved patience and burst. This backfield has plenty of fantasy potential in a high-scoring offense, but the Grant-Starks duo threatens to be a "hot hand" situation all season long.

Michael Vick continues contract talks with Eagles

893785Getty Images
At a time when ESPN has devoted an entire issue of its magazine to Eagles quarterback Mike Vick, the Eagles are preparing to devote a whole lot of money to him.
Howard Eskin of WIP and NBC 10 reports that talks between the team and Vick are moving forward.
Per Eskin, the Eagles made an offer last week.  Vick has countered this week.
From Vick’s perspective, it would seem to make sense to get the deal done quickly, in the event that he’s unable to repeat in 2011 the performance that prompted the team to apply the franchise tag and the $16 million in guaranteed salary that goes along with it.
Last year, things came easily for Vick, who had no pressure and no expectations.  This year, he’s the captain of the SS Dream Team.  If three preseason interceptions are enough to get him to launch himself helmet first into Troy Polamalu’s crotch, what will happen if/when he throws three interceptions on Sunday, September 11 in St. Louis?
Sure, Vick has faced pressure before.  But in Atlanta he was Michael Jordan without Scottie Pippen.  In Philly, he’s Jordan with Pippen and Horace Grant and a whole host of other guys who, on paper, make the Eagles the team to beat.
Thus, if the Eagles fail to live up to the hype in part because Vick becomes an INT machine, the powers-that-be in Philly may be less willing to give as much paper to Vick later as they are right now.

Phil Costa could push Andre Gurode for Cowboys center spot

Jacksonville Jaguars v Dallas CowboysGetty Images
We have more proof that Pro Bowl nominations are often ridiculous, and NFL Network’s “Top 100″ list badly misfired.
Cowboys center Andre Gurode may not make the Cowboys starting lineup, despite making the Pro Bowl and ranking No. 57 on NFLN’s list last year.
This isn’t a huge shock because Gurode’s play was uniformly described as sub-mediocre last year and he’s coming off knee surgery.  He could lose his job to second year undrafted player Phil Costa.
Coach Jason Garrett confirmed Costa may take Gurode’s job.  They have been splitting first team reps.
We want to create competitive situations throughout our football team. It’s really why we don’t talk about starters,” Garrett said via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Gurode is due $5.5 million this year. It wouldn’t shock us following this news if he’s cut or traded for a late-round pick.

Joe Webb looks like he could beat out Ponder for the backup role

Christian Ponder, Joe WebbAP
Early in the offseason, it sounded like Vikings first round pick Christian Ponder had as good a chance as any rookie quarterback to start in Week One.
As the lockout wore on, Ponder’s chances went down.   Ponder’s chances evaporated when Donovan McNabb arrived in town.  Now it looks like Ponder may not even win the No. 2 quarterback job heading out of camp.
Coach Leslie Frazier announced Thursday that Joe Webb would backup McNabb in the team’s third preseason game, according to Tom Pelissero of espn1500.com. The competition for the backup job is not over, but clearly Webb has the edge if he’s playing in the all-important game No. 3.
There are still two preseason games and a number of practices to go, but Ponder hasn’t made a huge impression early.  (Which is to be expected for rookies that didn’t have OTAs.)
Ponder is 14-for-25 in the preseason for 147 yards.  He has been sacked three times and looks a little slow in going through his reads.  It’s not a great sign Ponder isn’t clearly beating out Webb, but it’s way too early to panic.  (Aaron Rodgers notably had a miserable first offseason/training camp.)
It’s not too early, however, to say it was a good idea to bring in a veteran to start over Ponder.

Eagles reportedly not comfortable with Casey Matthews progress

Despite their public stance to the contrary, the Eagles are reportedly "sniffing around other teams" for an alternative to Casey Matthews at middle linebacker.
"Don't be surprised if a move is made in the next few days to bring in someone who can push Matthews for the job," says beat writer Geoff Mosher. If that option fails, the Eagles can move Jamar Chaney back to the middle. Matthews is clearly on the hot seat.

It's too bad they waited so long.  Several serviceable veteran MLBs are now gone from the free agent pool including Nick Barnett and Kirk Morrison.

Whitehurst's garnering praise for being a quick study of the new offense

Coach Pete Carroll praised Charlie Whitehurst's learning curve this week in Darrell Bevell's West Coast offense.
"Charlie's functioning beautifully," Carroll said. "He's farther along that I thought he would be this early." Whitehurst has completed 72 percent of his passes through two games compared to 58 percent for Tarvaris Jackson. Unless T-Jack picks up the pace over the final two preseason games, Whitehurst could start pushing for the Week 1 job.
Source: SI.com

It won't be long before Whitehurst is the starter.  He has already clearly out performed Jackson in the preseason.  If this continues maybe Sidney Rice will have some fantasy football relevance after all.

Chris Johnson: "We are not seeing eye to eye"

Chris JohnsonAP
Chris Johnson met with the Titans on Wednesday, but all indications point to the two sides being far apart on contract talks.  Johnson has returned to Florida in the meantime.
“I feel like I came in and they gave me their points and we gave them our points and we are not seeing eye-to-eye right now,” Johnson said via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean.
The Titans echoed that sentiment in a statement.
“We were able to discuss several different elements of a potential contract, but there was no agreement on those topics,” Titans G.M. Mike Reinfeldt.
We said that we’d start to get skeptical about Johnson being ready for the season if there was no progress this week.  Meeting is a step in the right direction.   Wyatt believes Johnson wants considerably more than $10-million-per-season, and the Titans aren’t willing to go that far.
Tennessee does want Johnson available for the season opener, though.  Promising backup Javon Ringer has been out for the last week with an injury, so the team will likely use third-string rookie Jamie Harper as the starter this week.
UPDATE: Here’s Florio’s take from PFT Live on the latest with Johnson.
