The war between Palmer and the Bengals is far from over

Willie Young, Jordan PalmerAP
Former (for now) Bengals quarterbackCarson Palmer reportedly believed that the team was simply jerking around his younger brother, Jordan, holding his rights until it would be too late for the younger Palmer to get another job elsewhere.
Though the team’s true intentions remain unknown, the Bengals cut Jordan Palmertoday, only 12 days before the start of the 2011 regular season.
The Bengals also released safety Tom Nelson, cornerback Fred Bennettt, cornerback LeRoyy Vann, linebacker Stephen Franklin, and receiver Jamere Holland.
Nelson spent two seasons with the Bengals, appearing in 20 games and starting three times.
Jordan Palmer had signed a one-year, $1.2 million restricted free agency tender with the Bengals.  RFA tenders aren’t guaranteed.  Jordan Palmer will now be subject to waivers.  Once he clears waivers, he’ll be free to sign anywhere.
The three quarterbacks currently on the Bengals’ roster are Andy DaltonBruce Gradkowski, and Dan LeFevour.
Carson Palmer remains on the team’s reserve/did not report list, which means he hasn’t retired.  And we remain curious as to whether Carson will show up at some point between September 6 and 9, forcing the Bengals to choose between cutting him or essentially guaranteeing his 2011 base salary of $11.5 million.
This isn’t about cap room, of which the Bengals have plenty.  This is about cash.  Will owner Mike Brown pay Palmer $11.5 million either to stand on the sidelines or to be a reluctant leader of the offense?  If Carson makes his power play, we’ll find out soon enough whether Brown is willing to sacrifice eight figures in order to make a point.

Lee Evans shows up in a walking boot

Washington Redskins v Baltimore RavensGetty Images
Lee Evans had a bit of a breakout for the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night.  The question now becomes whether he broke anything in the process.
Evans showed up at practice on Saturday in a walking boot, according to Aaron Wilson of theCarroll County Times.
The apparatus was attached to Evans’ left foot.
That said, Evans reportedly was able to stand on one leg, with his left foot supporting his weight.  He also performed stretching exercises.
Evans caught three passes for 68 yards against the Chiefs in Week Two of the preseason, including a 43-yarder.  On Thursday against the Redskins, Evans caught three more, for 60 yards and a 35-yard touchdown.

Cassel and Chiefs passing game continue to struggle

Matt Cassel completed just 6-of-13 passes for 59 yards in the Chiefs' third preseason game Friday night.
Cassel has looked uncomfortable ever since it was announced then-offensive coordinator Charlie Weis would be leaving for the University of Florida last winter. His passes are consistently off target, and there have been no signs of life during the 2011 preseason. Through three exhibition games, Cassel is 12-of-27 for 132 yards and a lost fumble. You can do much better as a QB2.

Revis disagrees with Vontae Davis' claim

2011 AFC Championship: New York Jets v Pittsburgh SteelersGetty Images
We noted this morning that Miami’s Vontae Davis says he and Sean Smith are the best pair of cornerbacks in the NFL. Word of that got back to Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, and he respectfully disagrees.
Revis said the 23-year-old Davis, who’s only played two years in the league, has more he needs to accomplish before he can count himself among the truly elite.
He’s got to play a couple more years before he’s saying all that,” Revis said. “They’re a good tandem but they have a lot of work to do.”
Revis said that anyone who doesn’t think he and Antonio Cromartie are the best pair of cornerbacks just need to watch the film.
“It really don’t matter because the film don’t lie,” Revis said. “The film don’t lie. You can say what you want to say. You can say the sky is red but it ain’t red. That’s just what it is. We know how we play and we know what we do on that field not just as a corner tandem but as a secondary. We play great football.”
Davis may argue with that, but not many others would.

Friday night game recaps

Green Bay Packers v Indianapolis ColtsGetty Images
Below is our quick look back at Friday night’s two game slate.  If you missed Thursday night’s recap, miss it no more.
Packers 24, Colts 21
1. Aaron Rodgers looks ready for the season.  He was sharp again, especially in the no-huddle offense. Rodgers has completed 34-of-43 passes for 375 yards with three scores in the preseason.
2. Green Bay’s offensive line doesn’t look ready yet. Rodgers took four sacks in one half. Chad Clifton had a very rough night, with two sacks allowed and a holding call to nullify a touchdown.
3. Former Bears defensive tackle Tommie Harris has found life in Indianapolis.  He likely wrapped up a roster spot with a good effort, including a key sack.
4. Packers running back Ryan Grant looked blah once again. He split time with James Starks, who may have struggled with blocking assignments on third downs.  Starks was a nice weapon as a receiver.
5. Curtis Painter showed signs of life after another slow start. It should be enough to stay ahead of Dan Orlovsky on the depth chart, but it’s probably too late to fend off Kerry Collins.
6. Peyton Manning didn’t say a lot during a sideline interview, but sounded hopeful for a Week One return.
Rams 14, Chiefs 10
1. St. Louis won’t only be about passing under Josh McDaniels. They ran the ball 25 times in the first half alone, for 123 yards.  Steven Jackson and Cadillac Williams were solid.
2. Sam Bradford seems comfortable in a dink and dunk offense.  (16 attempts for 96 yards and two touchdowns.) His receivers struggled to separate. Brandon GibsonMike Sims-Walker, and Danny Amendola look like the top three Rams receivers.
3. Matt Cassel continues to struggle.  He went 6-for-13 for 59 yards. His only scoring “drive” went backwards after a turnover.  The Chiefs starting offense got nothing out of the preseason.
4. Dexter McCluster has been the best Chiefs offensive player this preseason.  (Although that’s not saying much.) He had five catches. We’ll see if that carries over.
