Hanks Williams Jr. offers "apology"

Stephen Ross, Hank Williams JrAP
The latest AP item regarding the unlikely Hank Williams, Jr. Monday Night Football controversy focuses primarily on an apology posted on his website by the singer known for some reason as Bocephus, but there’s a little more to the story.  Though the AP characterizes Hank as “back[ing] off,” Williams displayed earlier in the day a hint of defiance in the face of ESPN’s decision to bench him for a week, possibly longer, after Williams said Monday on FOX News that the decision of President Obama to golf with House Speaker John Boehner was akin to Hitler golfing with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Here’s the full text of the apology, which appears not under the headline of “apology” but “thanks to my supporters”:  “I have always been very passionate about Politics and Sports and this time it got the Best or Worst of me.  The thought of the Leaders of both Parties Jukin and High Fiven on a Golf course, while so many Families are Struggling to get by simply made me Boil over and make a Dumb statement and I am very Sorry if it Offended anyone.  I would like to Thank all my supporters.  This was Not written by some Publicist.”
Here’s what Hank posted on his website before apologizing:  “Some of us have strong opinions and are often misunderstood.  My analogy was extreme — but it was to make a point.  I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me — how ludicrous that pairing was.  They’re polar opposites and it made no sense.  They don’t see eye-to-eye and never will.  I have always respected the office of the President.
“Every time the media brings up the tea party it’s painted as racist and extremists — but there’s never a backlash — no  outrage to those comparisons…  Working class people are hurting — and it doesn’t seem like anybody cares.  When both sides are high-fiving it on the ninth hole when everybody else is without a job — it makes a whole lot of us angry.  Something has to change.  The policies have to change.”
So it sounds like, earlier today, Hank wasn’t sorry.  Then, at some point, he became sorry.
Given that ESPN had yet to decide on whether Hank will be benched for one week or longer (or permanently) it’s possible that the public apology is part of whatever penance ESPN has asked him to perform.  The fact that the apology comes after his statement defending what he said makes the apology seem far more perfunctory and forced.
Especially since Hank’s more recent statements don’t address his assertion that Obama is “the enemy.”

Colts won't name Painter the starter yet

Indianapolis Colts v Tampa Bay BuccaneersGetty Images
After the Colts loss last night, the Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star wrote that the team may as well stick with Curtis Painter at quarterback even if Kerry Collins gets healthy.
We agree.  The Colts offense at least resembled a Colts offense in how they approached the game, even if Painter couldn’t always execute.
For now, Jim Caldwell won’t say who will start this week against the Chiefs.
“We’re not going to make that decision today,” Caldwell said. “I can tell you he did the things we asked him to do.  Obviously you can see he had some bright spots, but we’ll see how things go the next day or so.”
The Colts confirmed that defensive tackle Eric Foster underwent surgery on Tuesday. He’ll be in Tampa for a few more days.  The team didn’t update the injuries for rookie tackles Anthony Castonzo (left ankle) and Ben Ijalana (left knee).
Indianapolis hosts Kansas City on Sunday, which figures to be Indy’s best chance f0r a win for a while.  It also figures to be the game I want to watch the least this Sunday.

TTR's The Game Within the Game - Week 5

Julius Peppers may not lead the league in sacks each year.  Most analysts also agree that he isn't even the best pure pass rusher in the game.  That distinction typically belongs to DeMarcus Ware.  Yet he is widely considered the most feared pass rusher in the game today.  Why is that?  Peppers is a freak of nature like Ware, but Peppers is a more complete player as he is far better against the run.  Peppers also has the pure strength to fight through double teams.  This week he will he has to be pumped about facing off against Lions whipping boy Jeff Backus.  Backus fairly or unfairly has taken as much if not more abuse than any other Detroit player in the last 10 years.  Fans have continually begged for him to be replaced year after year.  Backus is a tough player who has gone through a lot, and never makes excuses.  Yes he has had some roller coaster performances but we need to take it into context.  "Sackus" Backus plays against two of the leagues premier pass rushers in Jared Allen and Julius Peppers twice a year each.  I would love to say that those guys will be shut down week after week, but it will not happen.  This week I expect Backus to hold his own in the passing game fairly well, but if Detroit does not give him help with a tight end or backs chipping on Peppers, he is bound to give up at least a few QB hits.  The Lions will be wise to get the screen game going early, and for the love all that is holy, don't run to them to Pepper's side of the field.  If they do, we could be seeing Peppers adding to his absurd interception numbers.

Champ Bailey and Marion McCree - New Orleans Saints v Denver Broncos

Champ Bailey has been dealing with a sore hamstring and has not been able to stay on the field yet.  But after the Packers shredded his team he said that he will play this weekend.  It is a good time for Bailey to get healthy as Philip Rivers and the air show that is the Chargers is coming to town.  Rivers is not having his best season so far, but he is still racking up yardage and Vincent Jackson is a big part of that.  Vjax has notched 20 receptions for 374 yards and 3 TDs after 3 games.  Denver will need Bailey to match up on this beast if they want to slow San Diego down.  In their last 3 meetings, Bailey has never allowed Vjax more than 4 receptions and 60 yards, he did get a TD in one of the games though.  I think the edge goes to Vjax on this one, only because the Champ probably won't be 100%.

Kevin Kolb has not been as completely fixated on Larry Fitzgerald as we all anticipated.  He has actually done a fair job of looking at other targets within the offense.  With that being said Larry does have 23 receptions for 361 yards and 2 TDs at this point.  This week he will primarily be covered by a little known corner who very little at all.  Second year corner back Chris Cook is 6'2 212lbs and can flip his hips and run with the best receivers in the game.  This second round pick out of Virginia is quickly becoming a solid corner in this league.  Two weeks ago he faced off against Calvin Johnson and did better than anyone could have hoped.   In that game Megatron only had 7 catches for 108 yards and 2 TDs.  Now to put that into perspective all of that production was not while Cook was covering him.  Some of it was in zone, or when Calvin moved across the formation to other positions.  Cook actually played pretty well considering the task at hand, and did have 2 passes defensed, including a deep jump ball.  Cook will continue to improve and could at least slow down Fitzy's production this week.

The Bills team has played well, and their pass rush isn't the reason.  After 4 games the Bills have only generated 4 sacks placing them in last place.  What do they need to do to get something going?  Well maybe playing the Eagles is the answer.   The Eagles offensive line has been playing pretty badly this year allowing 13 sacks and 28 QB hits after only 4 games.  Now yes, some of this is due to the fact that Vick extends the plays a lot, increasing the time they need to protect him.  However I feel a lesser mobile quarterback behind this offensive line would be a terrible idea.  This week is an opportunity for one of these units to prove they are not as bad as the other.  I think overall the Eagles win this battle, only because of Vick's elusiveness and not because of their play.

Dolphins searching for QB as fear over Henne's injury grows

Source: Pro Football Talk

As Chad Henne seeks a second medical opinion on his injured non-throwing shoulder, the outlook is grim.  The concern is that Henne separated that left shoulder.  This could likely force him to miss significant time if not end his season despite his willingness to play through pain.  The Dolphins have reportedly reached out to David Garrard and Jake Delhomme, but no agreements have been put into place at this time.

It makes you wonder if the Dolphins would be willing to make a deal for Orton or Palmer at this point.  Orton is quickly playing himself out of a job and will be a free agent next year, but the 'Phins need help now.  Palmer on the other hand is well rested and chomping at the bit to get outta Cincy, but what will Mike Brown require in trade?

These are the questions that should be answered in the next 48 hours.  Stay tuned.

James Harrison broke his face

Pittsburgh Steelers v Baltimore RavensGetty Images
The Steelers defense will find out what life is like without James Harrison.
Coach Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday that Harrison will undergo surgery Wednesday on a fractured right orbital eye socket.  Tomlin said Harrison would be out a “number” of weeks.
Harrison explained on Twitter: “My forehead pad in my helmet came down and hit me in the eye when I made contact with the tackle.”
With Harrison’s backup Jason Worilds also iffy to play, Tomlin indicated that Lawrence Timmons will move to the outside with Larry Foote replacing Timmons inside.
The Steelers’ defense has looked up-and-down thus far this season.  The overall numbers don’t look bad, but the Ravens and Texans ran right through them.  Tomlin indicated the team may practice in pads a few times this week.
It’s rare that a Ben Roethlisberger injury isn’t top news, but that was the case Tuesday. Tomlin indicated that Big Ben would likely be limited in practice early in the week because of his foot injury, but he should “round into shape” by the weekend.
While Tomlin wouldn’t say it outright, it sounds like there is little doubt Roethlisberger will face the Titans.
Running back Rashard Mendenhall is far less likely to play. If he’s out with a hamstring injury, Tomlin confirmed Isaac Redman will start with Mewelde Moore helping on passing downs.
Defensive end Aaron Smith has a mid-foot sprain and Tomlin seemed unsure if he’d suit up.

PFT's Power Rankings: Week 4

New Orleans Saints v Jacksonville JaguarsGetty Images
1.  Packers (No. 1; 4-0):  Get past the Falcons in Week Five, and the Packers could take a 10-0 record into that Thanksgiving showdown with the Lions.
2.  Saints (No. 2; 3-1):  In Jimmy Graham, the Saints have the steal of the 2010 draft.  InDarren Sproles, they have the steal of the 2011 free-agency class.
3.  Lions (No. 3; 4-0):  Get past the Falcons in Week Five Seven, and the Packers Lions could take a 10-0 record into a Thanksgiving showdown with the Lions Packers.
4.  Ravens (No. 4; 3-1):  When a team can overcome a bad performance by its quarterback and still win by 17 against a defending conference finalist, something special is happening.
5.  Patriots (No. 6; 3-1):  The current Dolphins’ quarterback would look a lot more like Tom Brady if Miami had never let Wes Welker get away.
6.  Texans (No. 14; 3-1):  Are Texans good enough to win games without Andre Johnson?  They apparently will get a chance to find out, if only for a few weeks.
7. Chargers (No. 7; 3-1):  The combined record of the teams the Chargers have beaten is 1-11.  And that justifies putting the Chargers closer to 11 than one.
8.  Buccaneers (No. 9; 3-1):  Yes, it was Monday Night Football.  Yes, they came back from 10 points behind.  But, yes, it was the Colts.
9.  Giants (No. 12; 3-1):  Even though the call was right, we’ve got a feeling thatVictor Cruz won’t ever leave a ball on the ground again.  Anywhere.
10.  Bills (No. 5; 3-1):  Well, at least they won’t start 4-0 and then fall apart like they did in 2008.
11.  Steelers (No. 8; 2-2):  Though it’s easy to be skeptical about Ben Roethlisberger’s injury, keep in mind that the boy who cried wolf eventually was eaten by a wolf.
12.  49ers (No. 17; 3-1):  We’d hate to see how many yards Frank Gore would have had against the Eagles if he didn’t have a bad ankle.
13.  Bears (No. 15; 2-2):  If Matt Forte runs for 205 yards with his contract supposedly serving as a distraction, the Bears should keep him that distracted every week.
14.  Titans (No. 20; 3-1):  Maybe the Seahawks should have kept Matthew Hasselbeck.  And maybe someone other than the Titans should have been in line to get him.
15.  Raiders (No. 10; 2-2):  Based on his boast that the Raiders will win the division, coach Hue Jackson caught a case of RexRyanitis from his postgame handshake with the Jets head coach.
16.  Falcons (No. 16; 2-2):  If the Falcons lose another one to Green Bay at home, the naming rights to the Georgia Dome should be sold to the Packers.
17.  Redskins (No. 18; 3-1):  Don’t complain, Redskins fans, about going up only one spot.  Beating the Rams by only seven could be regarded as a reason to fall five.
18.  Jets (No. 11; 2-2):  Nick Mangold is proving to be worth his considerable weight in silver.
19.  Cowboys (No. 13; 2-2):  Blowing a 24-point lead to Detroit may have been even worse than losing 44-0 to the Bears in 1985.
20.  Panthers (No. 19; 1-3):  Carolina fans know that, despite the current record, the wins are coming.
21.  Bengals (No. 25; 2-2):  It’s hard to imagine that this team would have been much better with Carson Palmer.
22.  Eagles (No. 21; 1-3):  The 13-year offensive line coach was shifted unexpectedly to defensive coordinator, but the team can’t figure out what its defense and offensive line now suck.
23.  Cardinals (No. 22; 1-3):  Well, at least Kevin Kolb’s team is currently doing better than the team of the guy he replaced in Philly.
24.  Browns (No. 26; 2-2):  How bad are the bad teams in the NFL this year?  The Browns lost badly at home, but they still moved up two spots.
25.  Jaguars (No. 23; 1-3):  It’s almost time to cue Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles.
26.  Broncos (No. 24; 1-3):  Maybe John Fox would prefer Jamie Foxx as Willie Beamen to Tim Tebow.
27.  Seahawks (No. 27; 1-3):  Another 7-9 finish won’t be good enough to win the division this year.
28.  Chiefs (No. 32; 1-3):  And there goes the best chance to keep Andrew Luck in red and white.
29. Vikings (No. 28; 0-4):  The good news for Minnesotans who don’t want the Vikings to leave?  It’s currently hard to think Los Angeles would want them.
30.  Colts (No. 29; 0-4):  If the front office had the same faith in Curtis Painterthat Reggie Wayne has displayed, the team may be better than 0-4.
31.  Rams (No. 30; 0-4):  Well, at least we now have a better understanding of why the Broncos fired Josh McDaniels.
32. Dolphins (No. 31; 0-4):  Stephen Ross thinks Tony Sparano is “the right coach.”  Sometimes there’s no need for a punch line.

Chris Cooley wants to fight Romo UFC style

Chris+Cooley+2_Dy45UlctqmGetty Images
Redskins tight end Chris Cooley is not too fond of Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
In an interview on the LaVar and Dukes show, Cooley said he had a great time watching Romo throw three second-half interceptions on Sunday, and that he would love to fight Romo in the UFC.
“It’s so good,” Chris Cooley said of seeing Romo and the Cowboys give up a 27-3 lead to the Lions, via Dan Steinberg of theWashington Post. “I was watching the scoreboard in St. Louis, and I didn’t see that they’d lost really until they end, I thought they blew them out so I kind of stopped paying attention. It’s amazing, amazing to watch him choke like that. I’m just saying, I’m up 24 points in the third quarter, if I’m the head coach, I feel like I could probably just take a knee for the rest of the game, punt it away and there’s no way that Detroit’s gonna drive on you that many times. The only way you’re gonna give up that many points is turnovers, right? It’s hilarious to watch him throw pick sixes, too, back-to-back. I loved it.”
Cooley then said the one thing he would enjoy more than seeing Romo lose on the football field is stepping into the cage with Romo and defeating him personally.
“But it wouldn’t be as good as my cage fight,” Cooley said. “For me to beat Tony? I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know what kind of cage fighting skills he has. I would probably try to incorporate my wrestling ability, like when I was in high school. Obviously it’s been a while, but I didn’t like to beat people fast. I like to embarrass ‘em a little bit. Like, take a 24-point lead, and then just play with it a little bit.”
It’s no surprise that Romo is hearing a lot of criticism this week after throwing the game away against the Lions, just as he heard a lot of praise the week before — after beating Cooley’s Redskins.

Jason Garrett concerned with Dez Bryant's conditioning

Dez BryantAP
Dez Bryant deserves credit for playing the last two weeks at less than 100%.  He made the key catch in the win against the Redskins and caught two touchdowns against the Lions.
The problem is that Bryant has yet to play four healthy quarters in a row all year.  By the second half on Sunday, he was clearly gassed or not feeling right.  All three of his catches against Detroit came in the first half.
“Receivers need to be able to run throughout the ballgame, and when you don’t practice and you don’t run throughout the week, it’s hard for you to maintain the pace that you need to maintain throughout a 60-minute game,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday.
Garrett said that conditioning is definitely a concern because Bryant has barely practiced this season.  The team is hoping that the bye week helps to heal Dez and Miles Austin.
While Laurent Robinson had a big day against Detroit, the last three weeks have exposed Dallas’ lack of receiver depth. This just isn’t a playoff-caliber offense unless Bryant and Austin are both at full speed.

Alex Mack played with appendicitis Sunday

Alex MackAP
A week after Browns running back Peyton Hillis didn’t play with a case of strep throat, a teammate played with a slightly more serious medical condition.
Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealerreports that center Alex Mack played against the Titans with appendicitis.  Mack had an appendectomy on Monday.
Mack thought he simply had the flu.  Despite the possibility that the symptoms would be exacerbated by an involuntary hernia examination performed by a certain member of the Tennessee defense, Mack played Sunday and showed up for work Monday, and doctors assessed him and realized he needed immediate surgery.
“He’s tough as nails because he was feeling a little queasy during the game, too,” right tackle Tony Pashos said, per Cabot.  “I was over there last night watching Sunday night football with him and he was talking about some issues then, too, and I was like ‘maybe it’s just something you ate.’”
Mack’s handling of his business in this manner surely will reinforce the belief (as reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN on Sunday) held by some in the locker room that Hillis’ failure to play was influenced by his contract situation.

Why Arian Foster can make up for lost time against the Raiders this weekend

Article first published as Why Arian Foster Can Make Up for Lost Time Against the Raiders This Weekend on Technorati.
For Arian Foster and many Texans fans alike, the start to the season has been a frustrating one. He injured his hamstring in the preseason, only to re-injure it in the season opener. Foster was limited to 10 carries for 33 yards during the first 3 contests. Truth be told, those 10 carries were all in week 2, before he re-aggravated it again.
But Arian showed that he is healthy against the Steelers defense in Week 4. He galloped for 5.2 yards per carry to the tune of 155 yards. Foster showed the power and explosiveness that lead him to the rushing crown where he amassed 1,616 rushing yards. That is not counting the additional 604 yards he added in the passing game.
While Foster has been away, the competition has not been sleeping. The Raiders Darren McFadden has followed up on his break out season a year ago, with a red hot start to the season. Run DMC has already tallied 468 yards rushing at a sickening 6.2 yards per carry. The Raiders are a run first team so that trend should continue. If he stays healthy this year, no one should challenge him for the title.
Both of these elite backs should have a huge day this weekend when the Texans and Raiders face off. They both have displayed a true commitment to the run game and this should be a great game to watch. We keep hearing about the Raiders defense and how physical and imposing they are. But where is it? The Raiders rushing defense surprised me when I found it has given up 544 yards already. What is worse, they are giving it up in chunks. They allow an average of 5.9 yards per carry, with a league leading 8 runs of 20 or more yards. This trend continues and Arian Foster is licking his chops.

Namath's criticism of the Jets continues

Joe NamathAP
The man who led the New York Jets to victory in Super Bowl III is not done ripping this year’s version of the Jets.
Joe Namath, who last week said Rex Ryan has made the team too cocky, this week said G.M. Mike Tannenbaum has done a bad job in the draft, especially on the offensive line, where 2010 second-round pick Vlad Ducasse hasn’t worked out as expected.
“I’m not sure what’s going on there,” Namath said on ESPN 1050, via the New York Post. “We picked some poor players and we’re not owning up to it. That’s what it amounts to. You’ve got guys on the roster who have been picked and you keep trying to say, ‘OK, they’re going to work out.’ Well, guess what? We tried that with [Vernon] Gholston and it didn’t work out. You have to [say], ‘Hey, I made a bad pick, a bad selection,’ and move on. The Jets didn’t do that and it’s a little late for the season to get it righted.”
But while Namath criticized the Jets’ offensive line, he also criticized Jets receiver Santonio Holmes for telling reporters after Sunday’s game that the line needs to do a better job of protecting Mark Sanchez.
“That was a mistake, it surely was,” Namath said. “For Holmes, as a captain, to go outside, to the media, and start pointing fingers. . . . I mean, he’s right about the ball getting out late to him [on Sanchez's third-quarter interception], and he’s right about the offensive line, but that can create a problem in the locker room. . . . That divisiveness can bury a team. They’ve got to correct that right away.”
Namath isn’t necessarily wrong in his criticisms, but he is running the risk of sounding like his criticisms are personal. No one likes to hear the old guy talk about how things were different “back in my day,” and that’s what Namath is starting to sound like.

Bucs outlast Colts on Monday Night Football

Indianapolis Colts v Tampa Bay BuccaneersGetty Images
Not so deep thoughts after the Bucs outlasted the Colts 24-17 Monday night.
1. The Bucs have a knack for these fourth quarter finishes. Tampa took its first lead of the game with under four minutes left on a 35-yard LeGarrette Blount power run to the end zone.  They quickly got the ball back and closed out the game on the ground.
2. The next step for Tampa: Play better during the first three quarters.  They were flat, especially on offense, in the first half. The Bucs are the type of team that keeps it close with any team — good and bad.  Truly good teams know how to win by two scores occasionally.
3. The Colts did a remarkable job considering all their injuries. They were down to one true defensive tackle after Eric Foster and Drake Nevis were injured.  They lost starting rookie left tackle Anthony Castonzo early in the game. Second round pick tackle Ben Ijalana got hurt in the fourth quarter.
4. Curtis Painter showed enough to keep the Colts starting job. He didn’t complete half his passes (13-for-30), but he connected on two long strikes to Pierre Garcon, avoided the big mistake, and moved the ball fairly well at times.  They put up 318 yards despite only having the ball for 21 minutes.  Painter had no answer for the blitz, though.
5. The Colts are giving fans the best of both worlds. They are playing hard at 0-4, but staying in great position in the “Suck for Luck” campaign.
6. Tampa’s young defensive line took the game over in the fourth quarter. 2010 No. 3 pick Gerald McCoy had a big night. Michael Bennett and Adrian Claybornare both nice young players.
7. Tampa is 3-1, but two of those wins came against 0-4 teams. They need to find more weapons on offense to be a Super Bowl contender, but there’s no denying this group is greater than the sum of its youngry parts.

Foster sufferes horrific injury

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Morris shakes hands with Indianapolis Colts head coach Caldwell before their NFL football game.AP
An ugly injury to Colts defensive tackle Eric Foster overshadowed a close first half between the Bucs and Colts on Monday night.
Foster’s leg/foot bent backwards unnaturally for everyone to see.  Teammates got emotional as Foster was fitted for an aircast and carted off the field. We’d be shocked if he played  again this season.
The injury came during a good two minute drive by Josh Freeman that ultimately didn’t lead to points.  For a second straight week in primetime, the Colts defense is keeping a game closer than expected.
The Colts lead 10-7 at halftime after a Bucs field goal was overturned because Tampa had 12 men on the field.  Indianapolis scored their touchdown when Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib got out of position on an 87-yard touchdown catch by Colts wideout Pierre Garcon.
This game was billed as a chance for Freeman and the Bucs to show they belong on the national stage.  America — and Tampa ticket buyers — could use a little more convincing.
