Mike Munchak is committed to Chris Johnson

Chris JohnsonAP
There isn’t going to be a change on the Titans’ depth chart at running back.
Even though Javon Ringer got more touches on Sunday and was in the backfield when the game was still somewhat in doubt in the fourth quarter, Chris Johnson remains the starter in Tennessee. Coach Mike Munchak said that the team is sticking with Johnson as starter for Sunday’s game against the Bengals because he believes he is the player who gives them the best chance to win.
That’s not particularly surprising, although the motives might be more complicated than that. Benching your tailback seven games after giving him a huge new contract is a touchy subject, even if Ringer looked better on Sunday. Ringer’s not a great back, but he’s attacking the line of scrimmage in a way that Johnson hasn’t this season.
Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean said that Johnson’s contract did come up during Munchak’s meeting with the media. The coach said that he feels people have outsized expectations for Johnson in the wake of his new deal. That might be true, but honesty demands mentioning that Johnson would be getting the same kind of criticism if he was making the league minimum. Johnson is averaging 2.8 yards per carry, showing little to no burst and making no tacklers miss when he has the ball. Running backs have been cut for less, so it isn’t like critics are missing some kind of brilliance in CJ’s game.
It’s worth mentioning that Munchak said after the game that the team would let the flow of the game determine which back gets more work. Unless there’s a big change in the next few weeks, that could make Johnson’s status as the starter nothing more than a cosmetic move.

Hakeem Nicks hamstring is ok

Miami Dolphins v New York GiantsGetty Images
The Giants improved to 5-2 with a 20-17 win over the Dolphins on Sunday, but got some potentially bad news late in the contest when top wide receiver Hakeem Nicks left the game with a hamstring injury.
Nicks said after the game that he didn’t think he would be able to play against the Patriots in Week Nine, but the news is better on Monday. Nicks had an MRI and a source with knowledge of the exam told Mike Garofalo of the Newark Star-Ledger that Nicks’ hamstring is “all good.”
Coach Tom Coughlin described Nicks as “day-to-day” during his meeting with the media, which will probably remain the case as no structural damage doesn’t necessarily mean Nicks won’t run into problems between now and Sunday.
With the Patriots struggling to stop teams from moving the ball through the air, Nicks’ presence would obviously be a huge boon to the Giants offense. Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham have been having good seasons, but the attention paid to Nicks helps them find openings in the defense.
With all three and Eli Manning performing at a high level, the Giants have a much better chance to start the varsity portion of their schedule with a victory.

Redskins claim Tashard Choice off waivers

Tashard ChoiceAP
Tashard Choice will get a chance to get a measure of revenge on the Cowboys this season.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Choice was claimed off waivers by their divisional rivals in Washington. With Tim Hightowerout for the season and the Roy Helu/Ryan Torain combo struggling against the Bills, there’s certainly an opportunity for carries in the Redskins backfield.
The Cowboys waived/injured Choice to make room on the roster after rookie linebacker Bruce Carter was activated from the PUP list. Choice has been dealing with nagging hamstring and shoulder injuries, but clearly the Redskins don’t think the problems will keep him from helping him this season.
Choice’s production dropped sharply for the Cowboys the last two seasons. After averaging over five yards a carry in his first two years with Dallas, Choice averaged 3.7 and 2.7 yards per carry in 2010 and 2011 which made him expendable afterDeMarco Murray’s breakout game two weeks ago. Still, there’s no better spot for a running back to get a chance than with Mike Shanahan, especially in a year without a clear frontrunner for the tailback job.

Houshmandzadeh to work out for Raiders

The Oakland Raiders have planned a workout on Tuesday for wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who is quite familiar with Carson Palmer and head coach Hue Jackson. Jackson was the wide receivers coach for the Bengals when Houshmandzadeh was in Cincinnati.

The Raiders already have plenty of targets for Palmer to throw to, but as Houshmandzadeh has been the only one to workout with Palmer recently, the new quarterback seems like he wants him there.

Does T.J. really have anything to offer this team, though? Darrius Heyward-Bey has started to look like the receiver Oakland always expected him to be, and they have several other receivers to go along with him. Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore, and Louis Murphy, along with several others make out an extended receiving corps in Oakland.

Houshmandzadeh clearly has chemistry with Palmer already, but at 34 years old it's uncertain how effective he can still be. The Raiders will see what he has to offer tomorrow, but don't get your hopes up on Housh catching 112 balls again like in 2007.

John Fox not commenting on Tebow yet

Broncos coach John Fox refused to commit to Tim Tebow as his Week 9 starter following Sunday's loss to the Lions.
Tebow's performance was so horrific that you can't really blame Fox. The Lions' goal was to make Tebow "be a quarterback," resulting in three fumbles, a pick-six, and a 56.8 passer rating. Still, Tebow has just two 2011 starts under his belt and five in his career. We'd expect Fox to extend the leash for another game or two, especially considering his other options are Brady Quinn and ex-starter Kyle Orton. The 2-5 Broncos need to find out for sure if Tebow has any future as a quarterback, or in their organization at all. Oct 31 - 9:27 AM

To be fair to the young QB, the Detroit Lions have only allowed a 72.3 passer rating to opposing QBs, ranking them 4th in the NFL.  Add the fact that Tebow has little to no pass protection, and no established receivers and this got ugly quick.  Also just a note, if Decker got his second foot down in the back of the end zone these numbers would look a lot better.

Fred Davis is in a walking boot today

Fred Davis was spotted with a walking boot on his left foot Monday.
Davis did not miss any time during yesterday's loss even though the Redskins were down 20-0 after three quarters. Therefore, the boot may be a precaution stemming from soreness or a slight sprain. We should know more after coach Mike Shanahan's Monday press conference.

Blaine Gabbert's struggles growing

Blaine GabbertAP
Luke McCown threw two passes for the Jaguars on Sunday, and they both fell incomplete.  His quarterback rating was still higher than Blaine Gabbert’s by the end of the day.
Gabbert’s numbers and overall play have been regressing, and Gabbert didn’t start off too well in the first place.
The brief feeling that the Jaguars could re-enter the AFC South race has passed. They are 2-6, and anything more than six wins this year would be a huge surprise.
“Before our eyes, the Jaguars’ offense is shriveling like a dried prune,” Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union writes.
The best thing you can say about Gabbert is that he doesn’t throw interceptions. (He has fumbled six times.) The worst thing you can say: Just recite his numbers.
Gabbert ranks dead last among NFL quarterbacks in completion percentage (45.7) and yards-per-attempt (5.24) by wide margins. The schedule hasn’t been easy, but his average-per-attempt the last three weeks looks like he’s a mediocre running back: 4.19, 4.65, and 3.23.
The team hasn’t topped 100 yards passing for three weeks.
“I couldn’t imagine offensively that we’d be this anemic,” said Jaguars guard Uche Nwaneri said.
Some growing pains are inevitable, but coach Jack Del Rio couldn’t have imagined this either.  Or he would have stuck with McCown as the starter a little longer.

Sean Lee could have a dislocated wrist

LeSean McCoy, Sean LeeAP
Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee will get an MRI on Monday to confirm that he dislocated his wrist.
That’s which is the initial diagnosis according to Cowboys owner/trainer/coach/G.M./spokesman Jerry Jones.  Lee’s absence from the team would be a big blow. Their linebackers struggled in coverage after he left.
The Cowboys are also waiting to hear more about cornerback Mike Jenkins, who hurt his hamstring against Philadelphia. The Cowboys get Seattle this week as they try to get back to .500 once again.

Marcell Dareus dominant after move to nose taskle

Buffalo Bills Marcell Dareus celebrates his sack against the Washington Redskins during the first half of their NFL football game in TorontoReuters
The Bills had four sacks in six games coming into Sunday’s contest against the Redskins. They sacked John Beck nine times alone.
It was a defensive performance that has Bills fans rightfully dreaming about an AFC East title. The key change may have been the move of Marcell Dareus from defensive end to nose tackle.
The No. 3 overall pick had 2.5 sacks and two more tackles for loss. He chased Beck to the sideline on one fourth down play.
“You can’t find a big guy that runs like that,” linebacker Nick Barnett said via theBuffalo News.
We’ve watched Dareus closely in Bills games this year. He’s been solid for a rookie up until now, but this was the breakout game everyone wanted to see.
“He played unbelievable,” teammate Chris Kelsay said. “He made the plays that needed to be made. He’s a force to be reckoned with.”
The Bills defense has been searching for answers all year. They won’t get to face a shaky line like Washington every week, but perhaps moving Dareus to nose tackle could make a huge difference.

NFL moves Lions - Bears game Week 10 to 4:15pm (EST)

Bears quarterback Cutler tries to escape rush of Detroit Lions defender Suh as he throws out of his own endzone during third quarter NFL football game in DetroitReuters
Flexible scheduling comes to the NFL in Week 10, as the league tries to put the best games on at the best times for the TV audiences. But not much is changing for the first flexible Sunday.
The NFL announced today that only one game is moving on Sunday, November 13: Lions-Bears, which was scheduled to be shown at 1 p.m. Eastern on FOX but will now kick off at 4:15 p.m. on FOX.
Jets-Patriots will remain the NBC prime time game, as previously scheduled.
For Weeks 11-15, the NFL will announce any schedule changes no later than 12 days before the games in question. For Week 16, in which 13 games will be played on Saturday, December 24, there will be no flexible scheduling. For Week 17, the flexible schedule decisions will be made just six days in advance in an attempt to put a game with playoff implications in prime time.

Leigh Bodden could have a new home by 4pm (EST)

New England Patriots v Buffalo BillsGetty Images
As Peter King of Sports Illustrated and Football Night in America points out in his indispensableMonday Morning Quarterback column, Chargers-Chiefs won’t be the only game played on Monday.  Between now and 4:00 p.m. ET, teams have the ability to put in waiver claims for former Patriots cornerback Leigh Bodden.
Abruptly cut on Friday, any team can make a waivers claim for his contract.  (After the trading deadline, every player who is released must pass through waivers — even players like Bodden with four or more years of NFL service.)  King says that the 49ers, Bengals, Bucs, Chiefs, Bills, and Jets could make a claim.
The team with the highest waiver priority (i.e., the one with the worst record that makes a claim) will win his contract.
And it could be more than a one-year move.  With a contract that pays Bodden $2.064 million for the rest of 2011 and base salaries of $3.9 million in each of the next two seasons, that’s a bargain for a veteran cover corner.
So why did the Pats dump him?  (I mean, it’s not like he was photographed during the bye week with an adult film star, or something.)  King hears that Bodden was going through the motions, unhappy that he wasn’t one of the top three guys on the depth chart.
I’ve got a hunch there may be something more that forced the Patriots to simply cut the cord.  They could have used Bodden on Sunday against the Steelers, especially with Ras-I Dowling now in Injured Reserve.

Pete Carroll let's hormones get in the way of good coaching

Pete Carroll, Gary Cavaletto, Greg WilsonAP
Pete Carroll has done a lot of positive things in Seattle in a short time. He’s turned over the roster into a young group with a promising defense. He’s drafted pretty well and won a playoff game.
There is no denying one of Carroll’s shortcomings. He has been one of the worst gameday coaches in the NFL since he returned from USC. Carroll makes Andy Reid look composed by comparison with his clock management skills.
“We learned about what happens when a coach gets hormonal and tries to jam it down their frickin’ throat for the touchdown,” Carroll said after Sunday’s loss to the Bengals.
Carroll is referring to his fourth-and-two call from the three-yard line with 14 seconds left in the first half.  Marshawn Lynch picked up two yards, and time ran out in the half during a 17-3 game before Seattle could run another play.
“It’s tough to balance it, because I have an attitude and a personality about how I want to do it, but as a team, we’re not quite able to take advantage of that yet,” Carroll said.
This sequence wasn’t an isolated incident. Carroll has endured plenty of gameday blunders in Seattle, including a very similar situation against the Chargers last year. He’s starting to get more criticism in Seattle for his mistakes.
The end of the half fiasco took some attention away from the odd decision to start Charlie Whitehurst at quarterback.
Seattle announced Tarvaris Jackson as the starter, then played Whitehurst for a few drives. White struggled, so Seattle inserted Jackson. (Jackson played much better.) Carroll wanted to see if Whitehurst was functional first, but said that the team’s backup wasn’t suited for the team’s up-tempo plan.
So why start him if Jackson was available?
“We’re still in a transition period,” he said of his young team. “Still figuring it out.”

At least Brandon Jacobs has his fast-*** car

Miami Dolphins v New York GiantsGetty Images
The Giants just completed a comeback win at home to get to 5-2, two games up in the NFC East.
Running back Brandon Jacobs thus decided to throw another turd in the punch bowl.
“I’ve got nothing positive to say,” Jacobs said after the win via ESPNNewYork.com. “The most positive thing: I got family at home and I got a fast-ass car being delivered on Tuesday. That’s it.”
Jacobs had five touches in the game, which totaled ten yards.  Most of that playing time came when Ahmad Bradshaw battled an injured foot.
Jacobs seemed to realize that talking wasn’t going to help his cause.
“Cause I can’t say nothing,” Jacobs said. “I always say something for everyone else’s dislike.”
One thing we can all agree on: Fast-ass cars are sweet.

John Fox would not commit to Tebow for Week 9

Detroit Lions v Denver BroncosGetty Images
After the Denver Post called Tim Tebow the worst quarterback in the league on Sunday, we said that Tebow’s career prospects don’t need to be re-evaluated after each start.
That will prove difficult if Broncos coach John Fox re-evaluates Tebow’s status as a starter every week.
Speaking on Vic Lombardi’s CBS-4 show on Sunday night, Fox would not commit to a starting quarterback next week at Oakland.
We would still be very surprised if Fox made a change to Brady Quinn or back toKyle Orton, but Fox’s words can’t be comforting for those still affected by Tebow Fever.  Tebow doesn’t need to be a Pro Bowler, but he may need to show progress sooner than later to keep his job.  After the game, Fox was asked about his game plan.
“They were very simple,” Broncos coach John Fox said. “They dared us to throw.”
Tebow’s final numbers were ugly, but they were even worse until garbage time set in.  He was inaccurate and took way too many sacks.
“The D-line knew coming into this game that if we could stop Tebow’s feet and make him be a quarterback that we got a pretty good chance of winning,” Lions cornerback Chris Houston said via the Denver Post.
That’s a telling quote. It’s also telling that Fox already isn’t sure how long he’ll let Tebow “be a quarterback.”

I like Tebow a lot, but if he can't play then he can't play.  I have watched every snap of Tebow on film, and while he has looked bad.  He has bad footwork and throws an ugly pass. But, it is no-where near being completely his fault.

This offensive line has been nightmarish and the play calling has not helped the young QB at all.  I just hope he gets a fair shot to determine if he can or can't play the position.  There were times in both games where they ran plays that were designed to get the ball out of his hands quickly, and he did surprisingly well.  However there were far too many plays that forced him to hold onto the ball.

Yes he needs to get better at his pre-snap reads, but the majority of his sacks are not from him holding onto the ball too long.  They are the result of slow developing plays.  Tebow is not a young guy that is afraid to step up into the pock and deliver the pass, but rarely is he getting that opportunity.  I am not so sure that Fox or Elway want Tebow to succeed.  They both know the season is lost and the only way to get Tebowmania to end is to let him play himself out of the equation.  It seems they know that and are counting on it.

Rob Ryan: "I got out-coached"

Cowboys defensive coordinator Ryan reacts on the sideline during the Cowboys loss the Eagles during the third quarter of their NFL football game in PhiladelphiaReuters
Remember when Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan promised to “beat the ass” of the Eagles, whom he derided as the “all-hype team“? Yeah, it didn’t quite work out that way.
After the Eagles beat the Cowboys 34-7 on Sunday night, Ryan couldn’t do much more than admit it was his defense that got its ass beat.
“It’s not the first time I’ve said something and gotten my butt kicked,” Ryan told the Dallas Morning News after the game. “I got out-coached, out-everything. It’s all on me.”
Ryan’s defense just wasn’t up to the task on Sunday night. Eagles quarterbackMichael Vick completed 21 of 28 passes for 279 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Vick also ran seven times for 50 yards, and LeSean McCoy had 30 carries for 185 yards.
So Ryan’s comments are coming back to bite him, although he can take solace in the fact that owner Jerry Jones said after the game that he doesn’t have a problem with Ryan’s comments possibly being used as a motivational tool in the Eagles’ locker room.
“I don’t have that issue,” Jones said. “I just wish comments could make a difference somewhere. They don’t, anywhere.”
Ryan’s words make no difference at all when his defense plays like it did Sunday night.
