Receivers and defensive backs fight in Seattle

Earl ThomasAP
Temperatures are cooler in Seattle than in most of the cities with NFL teams having Organized Team Activities this week, but things are getting heated between the Seahawks’ wide receivers and defensive backs.
The Tacoma News Tribune reports that a skirmish broke out including several players in the two position groups.
It started when receiver Ben Obomanu and cornerback Jeremy Lane were tussling after the whistle blew on a play and had to be separated. Then safety Earl Thomas jumped in to help Lane, taking a swing at Obomanu. That led to receivers Doug Baldwinand Mike Williams jumping in to help Obomanu. (In the picture, wide receiverDeon Butler is pulling Thomas away from the fight.)
A few plays later, according to the News Tribune, safety DeShawn Shead “almost took Baldwin’s head off” on a pass over the middle.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he used the fight as an opportunity to talk to his players about competing hard without crossing the line.
“We’re asking these guys to work really hard, and it really matters to them and they really care,” Carroll said. “And they want to make their plays and their statements, and I don’t blame them one bit. But there is a line that you can cross, and that’s what we talked about afterward.”
And as much as Carroll likes competition, he draws the line at taking a swing at a teammate.

  2. Good. This is the kind of energy and fight good teams have. The Seahawks defense is going to be very exlosive this year.

    1. I agree with you, and I think this underrated defense is going to be significantly improved this year.

Not personally a Seahawks fan, but I think Carroll is building a better team than most think.

  3. If they had to cut a QB, which should they cut: Portis or Jackson?

    1. I would have to say Jackson would be on the chopping block first.

Seahawks GM John Schneider reportedly was very excited about Portis future with the team based on last preseason and his development throughout the season. He also comes at a very low price.

Jackson on the other hand may have already reached his potential at this point, and he still have a contract for $4 million dollars. Even if he was willing to restructure, he is more than likely gone, save for an injury.

    2. Agreed. It should be 1-Flynn 2-Wilson 3-Portis

      and maybe,

4 (practice squad QB) - Banks if he earns it

    3. I feel the same, but I like that fact that they are having an open competition in OTAs.

However, I hope for their own sake that they make a decision before they get too far into training camp. QB competitions that drag out too long usually don't have great results IMHO.

  4. Wow what a bunch of crap, let them get mad they should be mad and now maybe they will take it on the field with them this year and for Jackson just get rid of him I don't care one bit about him he sucks as a QB and he should just stay off the field he may be the nice person in the world but he isn't a QB or a good one anyway.

  6. There is no I in team, but there is in win..First you have to win... the object of the contest..and contest is what it is,competing to win..Who is the best is immaterial, its the team that win,,

  7. My concern has always been Carroll is not a high caliber coach and these fights are a sign of player's mounting frustration with the staff's inability to build a winner after so many years. The Hawks are due for a coaching change.
