Maurice Jones-Drew sets his sights on rushing record

Maurice Jones-Drew, who has been making headlines by his potential holdout in Jacksonville, is holding out on a different level in an interview with 102.3 The Ticket in Denver via SportsRadioInterviews.

Jones-Drew is holding out on the belief that he can reach Emmitt Smith's all-time NFL rushing record before his career is over.

“Yeah, I think it’s doable. I definitely think it’s doable," MJD said. "Once again, Emmitt Smith was in a different situation than a lot of us, though. I mean, he had a Hall of Fame receiver, Hall of Fame quarterback, Hall of Fame offensive line, Hall of Fame fullback. Whoever put that team together did a heck of a job, and it just showed. … Don’t get me wrong: he was the reason they won, but he had a lot of guys around him as well.”

Currently, Smith has nearly triple the career yardage Jones-Drew has with 18,355 yards all-time, racked up over 15 NFL seasons. Jones-Drew has accumulated 6,854 yards in six seasons with the Jaguars.

Of course, in order to get busy chasing Smith's record, Jones-Drew must first get busy getting back onto the field for the Jags, which will be interesting given his supposed displeasure with his contract situation. And while MJD will probably end any potential holdout before the regular season begins, he might want to note what type of season old rival Chris Johnson put together last year following his holdout that ended just before the opening week.
