Chargers expected to release Marcus McNeil

Oakland Raiders v San Diego ChargersGetty Images
Chargers left tackle Marcus McNeill got his big contract in October of 2010. It was considered risky because of his health, and he wound up only playing nine games in 2011.
The 28-year-old two-time Pro Bowler isexpected to be waived in early March according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.  That would free up $10 million in cap space.

Redskins set to use franchise tag on Fred Davis

Kam Chancellor, Fred DavisAP
When Redskins tight end Fred Davis was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, coach Mike Shanahan said he was disappointed, big time. But apparently not so disappointed that Shanahan doesn’t want Davis on the team.
The Redskins plan to put the franchise tag on Davis prior to the start of free agency March 13, according to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, via CSNWashington.com.
The suspension aside, Davis had his best season in the NFL last year, catching 59 passes for 796 yards and three touchdowns. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent, and the Redskins can be sure to keep him in the fold with the franchise tag.
If Davis signs the one-year franchise tender, he’d get a guaranteed salary of about $5.5 million in 2012.

Theisman: Redskins signing Manning would be horrific

Joe TheismannAP
Redskins fans seem understandably excited about the possibility of adding Peyton Manning this offseason.
Perhaps the biggest fan of them all — former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann — is not so excited.
“It’s not a good idea, it’s not a bad idea — It’s a horrific idea,” he told 106.7 last week via DC SportsBog. ”It would be one of the poorest things that we could do as a franchise. Are we gonna go find another guy for just a couple of years again? Haven’t we done this before? Haven’t we seen this act before? And by the way, if you get Peyton Manning, don’t you have a concern about protecting him? Don’t you have a concern about who he throws the football to?”

Two Giants tight ends tore their ACL in the Super Bowl

Jake BallardAP
The Giants are going to need to add a couple of tight ends this offseason.
While the team was wrapping up their dual celebrations in Manhattan and East Rutherford on Tuesday afternoon, they announced that tight end Jake Ballard tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Super Bowl. Ballard was helped off the field and cameras caught him on the sideline as he tried to run, an attempt that ended with a spill into the arms of a member of the team’s medical staff. The team made the announcement via Twitter without any treatment details, but Ballard, who also has a partially torn PCL in his other knee, will have to have surgery and face a long rehab that will keep him out of action for quite a while.
The same is true of Ballard’s fellow tight end Travis Beckum, who also tore an ACL during the victory over the Patriots. Having the injury so late in the year means that the Giants can’t really count on either player for the start of next season. That should make tight end a priority for the champs during free agency and the draft as Bear Pascoe is the only other tight end currently on the roster.
