Rashaan Salaam was a Heisman Trophy winner, a first-round draft pick of the Bears and a 1,000-yard rusher as a rookie. And then he was cut by the Bears by the age of 23.
Looking back on his career now, Salaam has some advice for this year’s first-round draft picks: Don’t be lazy like I was.
I didn’t realize coming up how much work you had to put in once you got to the NFL,” Salaam told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s a whole different lifestyle. You have to change the way you live. You have to change who you hang out with. You have to totally get focused on your game. You have the athletic ability, but if you don’t put the work behind it, nothing will come from it.”

We’ve raised some questions in the last couple of days about whether the Browns really needed to give three draft picks to the Vikings in order to move up from fourth overall to third overall and draft running back Trent Richardson. Browns President Mike Holmgren says the Browns had to do it, but if the Buccaneers weren’t seriously interested in trading up for Richardson, the reality is that the Browns might have been able to get him by staying put and keeping those three picks they gave the Vikings.

A couple of weeks ago, 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said that he was okay with Randy Moss missing the start of the teams’ workouts because he knew Moss would be there long before anything mandatory got underway.
Baalke was proven correct on Monday when Moss showed up for workouts. It was the first day of what the 49ers are calling “Football School” when they have players focusing on techniques and fundamentals specific to their positions with coaches allowed to work with them on the field. Moss told the 49ers website what it felt like to be back out on the football field after such a long layoff.
