Suggs plans to shock people with speedy recovery

Terrell Suggs isn’t coming close to backing down on his pledge to be back on the field for the Ravens this year.
Nowhere close, as a matter of fact. Suggs might even be pushing more of his chips into the center of the table. Mike Preston of theBaltimore Sun spoke to Suggs and the 2011 Defensive Player of the Year said that late November would be the latest he’d be backfrom his Achilles injury.
“I’m going to shock a lot of people when I’m coming out of that tunnel,” Suggs said. “I’m in a boot already working on flexibility, getting back that range of motion. Next week, we’re going to start a little walking and working side to side. I won’t say I’m ahead of schedule, but I’m a lot better than I, the doctors and rehab therapist thought. I kept telling people it wasn’t as bad as some people made it out to be.”
Suggs also suggested that the injury came as a result of pushing himself too hard too early in the offseason. There has been talk that the Ravens could try to get some money back from Suggs because he was working out away from the team’s facility, but Suggs said he’s heard nothing of what he termed “petty gossip.”
The Ravens share Suggs’ hopeful outlook about a 2012 return although it is far too early to know if Suggs will be proven correct.

2012 AFC East Season Preveiw

Guest Post by Niles Pender of NFL Fan Appeal

With the 2012 NFL regular season just a few months away, now is the time where people normally start making guesses as to who will make it all the way this year. The smart football fans out there will have the AFC East as one of their top divisions. After all, a team from the division has made an appearance in the AFC Championship Game for three consecutive years and for five of the last six. Let’s take a look at each of the teams and how they’re set to measure up for 2012.

Any discussion of the AFC East has to begin with the New England Patriots. The reigning AFC Champions finished 13-3 last season with the best record in the conference. They stormed through the playoffs and were just 57 seconds away from adding another Super Bowl to their legacy before Ahmad Bradshaw’s six-yard carry dashed those hopes.

Still, there’s every reason to believe that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick can add another ring to their collection this year. Both of the two are back, for starters, and that means that they’re a contender under nearly any circumstances. The team has also made moves to improve a defense that ranked near the bottom of the league last year, adding DE Chandler Jones and LB Don’t’a Hightower through the draft. The only cause for concern right now in New England is the ongoing Wes Welker contract situation, but it seems unlikely that the two sides won’t be able to strike a deal. Look for New England to maintain its position as one of the top teams in the league.

Of course, there is a team right on the heels of the Patriots named the Jets. The team’s 2009 and 2010 campaigns saw them go to two straight AFC title games. New York actually looked poised to take the crown away from an aging Tom Brady.

Unfortunately, the Jets seemed to be spinning their wheels for most of 2011. Santonio Holmes, an important part of the team’s offense after being acquired in a 2010 trade, posted some of the worst stats of his career. Plaxico Burress, who was expected to fill some of the void left by departed WR Braylon Edwards, never established himself as a consistent threat. Couple in the ongoing rift between Mark Sanchez and Holmes, and it becomes clear why 2011 was such a disaster for the team.

To their credit, the Jets appear to be making strides towards a much-improved 2012 campaign. Sanchez and Holmes have publicly resolved their differences. Perhaps more importantly, the team traded for Tim Tebow.  Depending on how one looks at it, the trade was either a sign that management doesn’t believe in Sanchez or that Rex Ryan has some new tricks up his sleeve. Either way, the Jets will be looking to return to their 2009 and 2010 glory this season.

After the Patriots and Jets, there are the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. Both teams are going to be interesting to keep any eye on in 2012. Buffalo started 2011 with a remarkable 5-2 start. The team looked like world-beaters behind the strong play of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and RB Fred Jackson. Unfortunately, the bunch lost most of its focus after the bye week, only winning two games and finished with a 6-10 record. The offseason saw them draft 10 new players, including taking CB Stephen Gilmore out of South Carolina with the tenth overall pick. The talent is there, so whether the Bills can maximize their potential in 2012 looks like it will hinge mostly on chemistry.

Finally, there’s the Dolphins. The team was the anti-Buffalo in 2011, starting out horribly but finishing with six wins in their last nine games for a 6-10 record. Head coach Tony Sparano is out, and he’s been replaced by former Packers coordinator Joe Philbin. The team took the coveted QB Ryan Tannehill in the first round of the draft and also dealt away mercurial WR Brandon Marshall. If Tannehill gets the nod at starter, there’s a real chance that Miami can make a strong bid for the postseason. If not, the team should still look competitive if it can maintain the focus that it developed at the end of last season.

2012 will be an interesting season for the AFC East. The Patriots and Jets both have legitimate chances of making the Super Bowl, and it seems like a sure thing that at least one of the teams will compete in the AFC Championship. As for the Dolphins and Jets, both teams showed flashes of brilliance in 2011 and will look to prove themselves as playoff teams in 2012. There are some great rivalries in this division, and they’ll be entertaining to watch when the NFL kicks off in a few months.

Titus Young says things are fine with Delmas

Titus YoungAP
The Lions welcomed wide receiver Titus Young back to Organized Team Activities last week, but he did not address his absence for punching safety Louis Delmas with the media until Monday.
Young said that he and Delmas are getting along fine after their little dust-up and that they are joking around without incident while in the weight room. Young also talked about apologizing to the team last week for his behavior, something he said he felt he needed to do because he put himself above the rest of the team, and explained why he thinks some time away from the team might turn out to be a good thing for him.
“Anytime you get time away from a situation, whether it’s a relationship, whether it’s football, whether it’s interviewing, you get time to see what’s really important, to put things in perspective, and time heals all wounds, I believe,” Young said, via Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. “Anytime you go through anything, maybe sometimes you need some time off to sit back and think and reflect and think about the city of Detroit and think about the kids who wish they were in my position right now, think about the owner of the organization, Mr. Ford, and think about what he invested in me. Just think about a lot of things that you really can’t think about sometimes when you’re sitting in a situation.”
Young said that he doesn’t plan to talk about the incident with Delmas any longer because he’s only interested in the future. He also wouldn’t answer questions about whether or not he got counseling as a result of his punch.
The time away doesn’t seem to have hurt Young on the field. Richardson tweeted Monday morning that no one on the Lions could defend him. Assuming Young’s telling the truth about all being well in the locker room, it probably wasn’t because they were afraid of getting punched if they came too close to Young.

Martellus Bennett: I'm 291 because I rocked out in the weight room

When Giants tight ends coach Mike Pope revealed thatMartellus Bennett’s weight had ballooned to 291 pounds this offseason, Pope said Bennett was “too big for his legs to carry.” But Bennett talked to reporters shirtless today and told them he’s 291 pounds of solid muscle.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that Bennett stood in front of the media in just shorts and asked, “Do I look fat?” (Vacchiano does not supply his answer.)
Bennett added that he reached to 291 pounds (up from his lifted weight of 265) because he “rocked out” in the weight room and turned himself into “a physical freak.”
“I’m one of the top 5 strongest guys on this team right now,” Bennett said.
That statement may not speak well to the Giants’ offensive and defensive linemen, but if Bennett has been working as hard in the weight room as he claims, good for him. Still, the fact that his position coach thinks he’s too big for his legs to carry is a concern, because the Giants are counting on Bennett’s legs to be fresh into the fourth quarter this season.

Bucs safety situation coming into focus

Ahmad Black Pic
Due to injuries and poor performance, the Bucs have started four different players at safety over the past two seasons. Eight different defensive backs saw time at safety in Tampa in 2010, and seven in 2011. It’s basically been a revolving door position two years running.
Gone are Tanard JacksonSean Jones, and Corey LynchCody Grimm returns as a backup. Long gone is much-maligned Sabby Piscitelli.
In are former cornerback Ronde Barber and first-round pick Mark Barron.
Barber is now the starting free safety, while Barron is running with the first-team defense at strong safety. According to PewterReport.com, Ahmad Black has emerged as Barber’s primary backup, with Grimm working behind Barron.
A 2011 fifth-round pick, Black spent part of his first season on the Bucs’ practice squad. Since Barber will slide down to cover slot receivers in Tampa’s sub-package defense, Black is set up for a significantly bigger role in 2012.
Oh yeah. For sure,” Black said. “When we go to dime, Ronde goes to the [slot] role and I go to free safety. I’ll do whatever I can for my team and do what’s best for us.”
Black also explained that the safety spots in Tampa are no longer considered interchangeable, as they were in old coach Raheem Morris’ Tampa-2 scheme. Under new head coach Greg Schiano, the Bucs use a true free safety and a more traditional in-the-box strong safety.
“The free safety is the free safety and the strong safety is the strong safety,” Black clarified. “We haven’t been interchanging. I’m just playing the free.”

Labor talks break down, NFL to hire replacement officials

Brad Biggs - National Football Post
Labor talk fueled with lots of rhetoric was all we heard at this time last year when the NFL and NFLPA began engaging in clandestine talks.
Labor talks again are an issue for the NFL and this time it involves the referees and officials. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, talks between the league and the officials have broken off. The NFL has advised teams it will work to hire replacement officials.
The league and the officials had agreed to work with a federal mediator and apparently that did about as much good as it did last year when the league and players went down the same road. Could this be a negotiating ploy? No question. Could it actually happen? No question.
The NFL used replacement officials for Week 1 in 2001. That was before social media and the intense focus that will come in 2012 if the league begins the season with inexperienced officials and risks having regular-season games on the line with men in black and white uniforms that are rookies. That is the pressure the officials will attempt to use at the negotiating table. We’ll see what direction this heads.

Bucs sign rookie Doug Martin

Doug Martin PicGetty Images
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Monday that they have signed No. 31 overall pick Doug Martin to a rookie contract.
The Bucs have signed all but one member of their seven-man draft class, with safety Mark Barron the lone rookie pick remaining.
Martin, 23, figures to emerge as the lead back in a one-two punch with LeGarrette Blount sooner rather than later. The Bucs’ website announcement of Martin’s rookie deal stated that new coach Greg Schiano “intends to emphasize the running game” and “utilize [Martin] heavily.”
Martin is a much more versatile back than Blount, with more wiggle as a ball carrier. New Bucs offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan, the old Giants quarterbacks coach, could use Martin ala Ahmad Bradshaw and Blount like Brandon Jacobs. The Bucs’ ground attack should be much improved after a dismal 2011 season.

Best Offense in the NFL - Lions or Saints?

Gronkowski's ankle getting better each week

Terry McCormick - National Football Post
New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is still not able to practice four months after his ankle surgery, but tells the Boston Herald that he is not concerned about the situation.
"Everything is going well, just feeling better every single week,” said Gronkowski, who has been doing some work on the side during New England's OTAs.
According to the report, no one associated with the Patriots seems too concerned about Gronkowski's ankle at this point.

Chris Johnson still thinks he is the best back in the league

Titans' Johnson scores a touchdown against the Bills in Orchard ParkReuters
Thirteen NFL running backs ran for more yardage than Tennessee’s Chris Johnson last season, but Johnson doesn’t think any of them are better than him.
Johnson says he considers himself the NFL’s top running back, regardless of last year’s disappointing output.
“I feel I am still the best back in the league, and I have no problem saying that,” Johnson said, via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. “None of the active backs have done anything that I have done in the first four years, even though I had a bad year last year. So I still feel like I am the best back in the league.”
Johnson isn’t happy that he was ranked at No. 100 in the NFL Network list of the Top 100 players in the NFL, as voted on by their fellow players, and he believes people have to look at his entire body of work — including his 2,006-yard season in 2009 — in assessing his talents.
“There’s a lot of backs now who probably didn’t do anything the year before and then they rush for 1,500 yards and they are the top back,” Johnson said. “It’s crazy, really.”
Johnson said he thinks he can top 2,000 yards again. The Titans just have to hope he doesn’t struggle to top 1,000 yards again.

Suh wants to "show the true person" he is

Ndamukong Suh, Kid RockAP
The string of offseason problems for Lions players has obscured the fact that Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh had more than a few issues of his own during his second NFL campaign.  One of his goals in 2012 (and beyond, presumably) is to prove that last season was an aberration.
I want to show the true person I am,” Suh said Sunday at the Detroit Grand Prix, via theDetroit News. “Obviously, you see me here interacting.  You see me in the city of Detroit.”
Suh served as the grand marshal at the race.  Race chairman Bud Denker gave Suh a $5,000 check for his upcoming youth football camp, for children ages seven through 14.  It’ll be the second such camp for Suh.
“Probably one of the biggest compliments I got came from parents at my camp [last year] was that I was there from sun up to sun down,” Suh said. “That’s something I want to do.”
Regardless of who Suh truly is, he has an opportunity to help the team in a significant way, given the rash of grown men who are acting like children ages seven through 14.  With team president Bill Ford Jr. looking for veteran leaders to, you know, lead, Suh is one of the few on the roster with the chops to get Nick Fairly,Mikel Leshoure, and/or Titus Young under control.
