Vick motivated by his Top 100 ranking

Michael Vick, Mike Kafka, Vince YoungAP
A player who thinks he has more than his fair share of critics in the media apparently thinks he has more than his fair share of critics among his colleagues.
Ranked 70th by other NFL players among the top 100 players in the league, Eagles quarterbackMike Vick didn’t like it.  At all.
That’s a joke,” Vick told Mike Missanelli of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia.  “Maybe it was voted on by the peers, but I just disagree.  I know how good I am and what I bring to the table for my football team, and the things that I can do on the football field sometimes can be uncanny. . . .

Chad Ochocinco signs 1-year deal with Dolphins

On Hard Knocks, HBO won’t be getting Rex Ryan circa 2010 — it will instead be getting Chad Ochocinco circa 2009.
The flamboyant wideout, the star of the Bengals’ stint on the popular training camp show three years ago, has signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins, who’ll open their doors in 2012 to the cameras and the microphones.
Ochocinco broke the news via his “Ochocinco News Network,” an operation that largely was mothballed during Chad’s time with the buttoned-up Patriots.
Terms of the deal are not yet known.  It’s likely that he received a one-year deal for the 10-plus-year veteran minimum, which would pay him a base salary of $925,000 and up to $50,000 in additional compensation at a cap cost to the Dolphins of only $540,000, under the so-called “minimum salary benefit.”  If so, that would be only $25,000 less than the salary he was due to earn this season in New England, which will carry $2 million in dead money this year and $2 million in dead money next year under Ochocinco’s name.
Of course, unless the Dolphins have guaranteed all or part of the pay, Chad will have to make the cut from 90 to 53 in order to get the money.  Even if he doesn’t, he’ll help HBO and NFL Films make plenty of it in the coming weeks.
And the Dolphins now have someone who’ll soak up some of the attention that otherwise would have gone to other players and coaches who may have been uncomfortable with it.

I just really have to wonder how much control over this team that Joe Philbin really has.  It appears that decision after decision seem to be coming from a financial direction.  Hard Knocks, Ochocinco? Seems more like owner Stephen Ross is looking to drum up sales more than wins.

Steelers secondary could be getting younger soon

By Mike Wilkening - National Football Post

Jerome Simpson Keenan Lewis #23 and Will Allen #26 of the Pittsburgh Steelers upend Jerome Simpson #89 of the Cincinnati Bengals during play at Paul Brown Stadium on November 13, 2011 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Steelers won 24-17.Three cornerbacks with one NFL start between them will vie to start opposite Ike Taylor in Pittsburgh. Fourth-year pro Keenan Lewis, the eldest of the group at 26, and second-year defenders Cortez Allen and Curtis Brown, both 23, are the most likely candidates to start at left cornerback after William Gay signed with Arizona. “It’s going to be interesting,” Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said last week of the competition. “It will probably go on into training camp and some actual game competition before that sorts itself out. I feel good about what I’ve seen here so far.” Lewis received his most extensive playing time in 2011, notching 37 tackles, defending six passes and hauling in his first career interception in 16 games (one start). He likely rates an early edge, the way we hear it, but Allen and Brown have shown potential early in their Steelers careers.

Russell Wilson not intimidated at all

Seattle Seahawks MinicampGetty Images
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said recently that contracts wouldn’t play a part in his decision-making at the quarterback position.
That’s great news to the one who will make the least money this year.
Third-round pick Russell Wilson didn’t sound intimidated in the least, during an interview with KJR in Seattle, via SportsRadioInterviews.com.
“No, I’m not afraid at all of being a starter at all,” Wilson said. “I’ll be ready to go whenever my name is called. … It’s just like I always say, and I don’t know if you follow me on Twitter at all or anything like that, but I always tell people that are close to me that there’s no time to sleep. I’ve got no time to sleep. You’ve always got to be ready to go.”
Nothing against Wilson, but if he wins the competition, Seahawks fans are the ones with reason to fear.
Seattle just spent to bring in Matt Flynn ($19 million over three years, with $10 million guaranteed), and they have holdover Tarvaris Jackson at $4 million non-guaranteed.
If Wilson beats out Jackson (not inconceivable), the Seahawks can save a significant amount by releasing the former Vikings starter.
But if Wilson beats out Flynn, that’s a lot of money wasted.

Could Ochocinco actually land in Miami?

chad-ochocinco2Getty Images
Shortly after free agent receiver Chad Ochocinco said he had drawn genuine interest from Miami, the Dolphins confirmed that Ochocinco has worked out for the team.
Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin told reporters today that the team did, in fact, work Ochocinco out. Philbin didn’t offer many details, however, such as whether the team remains interested after getting an up-close look at Ochocinco.
We’re doing our homework,” Philbin said, via Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post.
Ochocinco would add depth at a position where the Dolphins need some: Miami could use another wide receiver. Signing Ochocinco would also fit with the philosophy of owner Stephen Ross, who hasn’t hid the fact that he wants to make a splash this offseason.
The question is whether Ochocinco has anything left after a rough 2011 season in New England. If the Dolphins don’t sign Ochocinco quickly after working him out, that would indicate either that his performance was underwhelming, or that their interest in him was never all that genuine in the first place.

Bruschi and Woody want Tebow to shut up

Tim TebowAP
It had become a joke among friends in recent days, that for my first post at PFT, I was going to lead it with “Tim Tebow,” whether it had anything to do with the New York Jets personal protector/backup quarterback or not.
I figured it would be good for business on my first day.
Tim Tebow it is.
A pair of respected former players recently said the best thing Tebow could do for the Jets is to not be so visible, or audible.
Stop talking to the media so much,” former New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi said. “You need to disappear, okay, Tim Tebow?  You’re not the starting quarterback, it’s Mark Sanchez’s team.  I want my voice to come from my head coach and my quarterback — my starting quarterback.  That message has to be consistent.
“I don’t want all this competition brewing, and every time you speak and anytime you talk about competition or anything like that, you’re twisting things.  I want one voice.  One quarterback, not two.”
On the same ESPN32 broadcast, former Jets offensive lineman Damien Woody echoes those sentiments, suggesting Tebow “not worry about all the media stuff and TV.  Leave that stuff for Mark Sanchez.”
Listen, these are all noble sentiments, with a valid intent.  But they ignore one salient fact about the Jets’ acquisition of the former first-round pick — this kind of attention is exactly what they wanted when they traded for him.  So if it turns out to be a distraction, it’s self-inflicted, and they have no one to blame but themselves.

David Diehl arrested for possible DUI

David_DiehlGetty Images
A week after two NFL players were arrested for DUI, another one may be coming.
Last weekend, Vikings fullback Jerome Felton was arrested for driving drunk in a drive-thru lane at McDonald’s.  The next morning, Jaguars receiver Justin Blackmon was arrested in Oklahoma with triple the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, allegedly.
On Sunday night, Giants offensive linemanDavid Diehl was arrested after smashing his BMW into multiple parked cars, according to Sarah Armaghan of the New York Daily News.
Diehl was arrested on the scene, on Broadway at 31st Street in Astoria.  There were no injuries, and official charges are pending.  Police said Diehl may have been driving drunk.

Safe Rides still available, but no longer free

9156499-largeGetty Images
NFL players who think they’ve have too much to drink can still get a ride home through their work, but there’s a fairly large asterisk.
The NFL, which handed the no-charge Safe Rides program to the union due to concerns the league was using it to spy on players, points out at the league-owned website that the program hasn’t been disbanded.  The NFL, citing the NFLPA director of security, explains that the program is still available to players.
