Texans sign Bryant Johnson instead of Roy Williams

Tennessee v HoustonGetty Images
Roy Williams‘ tryout with the Texans on Thursday garnered more notice, but he wasn’t the only former first rounder showing his wares to the team.
The other guy wound up getting the job. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports thatBryant Johnson, who played in all 16 games for the Texans last season, was re-signed by the team after the workout. Johnson was the 17th overall pick of the 2003 Draft by the Cardinals, but never wound up with more than 49 catches in his five seasons with the team. He also played for the 49ers and Lions before landing in Houston, where he caught six passes for 90 yards in 2011.

Brian Price traded to the Bears

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Brian Price sacks Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub during NFL game in TampaReuters
Brian Price is heading to Chicago.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that they traded Price, a defensive tackle who started 14 games in Tampa Bay last season, to the Bears for an undisclosed 2013 draft pick.
Price has had a turbulent offseason. His sister died in a car accident in May, and he and his wife (a hurdler who fell just short of qualifying for the Olympics) decided to adopt her children. He was later absent from offseason work in Tampa Bay after a fight with rookie safety Mark Barron.
A 2010 second-round draft pick, Price saw only limited action while dealing with hamstring problems as a rookie but came on strong last year. He’ll have to pass a physical before this trade is official, and if his hamstrings are continuing to bother him that could be a question, but assuming he can go he’ll have a good chance to start in the Bears’ defense.

Did the Jets burn their bridges to Revis Island?

Paul Jackiewicz - Pro Football Zone
According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, the relationship between the New York Jets and the agents for cornerback Darrelle Revis is in bad shape and there’s a chance that he won’t re-sign with them when he becomes a free agent in 2013.
“This tempest figures to nix any chance of Revis being a “Jet for life,” as he tweeted in mid-July. Sure, Revis has two years remaining on the deal the Jets gave him in 2010. Between this season and next, he’ll make $14 million, the final seasons of a four-year, $46 million extension,” wrote Cole. “Revis can’t be franchised when this deal is done. So once the 2013 campaign ends, Revis will be 28 and ready to hit the open market. Based on the fractured relationship between the Jets and Revis’ agents, it’s hard to imagine things going well.”
“As a Jets source put it this week, ‘You work on the things you can fix.’ The Jets aren’t working to fix this situation now,” reported Cole.
The problem with the Jets is that they’re not run like a first class organization and Revis should do himself a favor and get out as quickly as he can.

Initial reports of Janoris Jenkins deal exaggerated

St. Louis Rams minicampAP
When reports surfaced that the contract signed by Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkinscontained a greater percentage of guaranteed money than any other second-round pick, we smelled a rat.
And now we’ve found the cheese.
Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatchreported that the $5 million contract contained $3.1 million in guaranteed money.  That translates to 62 percent of the entire haul as guaranteed money.

Chiefs get Dontari Poe signed

On Tuesday, there was a report that the next 24 hours would be critical ones in the contract negotiations between the Chiefs and first-round pick Dontari Poe.
The two sides were described as being “not close” in that report, but something must have happened in the last 24-plus hours. The Chiefs and Poe, the 11th overall pick, have come to agreement on a four-year deal which sources tell PFT does include the offset language that has been a stumbling block in the negotiations of some rookie contracts.

Matt Kalil's deal is done, worth almost $20 million

Minnesota Vikings MinicampGetty Images
Matt Kalil, the highest draft pick who hadn’t yet signed his contract, got his deal done this morning.
The Vikings, who selected Kalil with the fourth overall pick in April, signed the offensive tackle today, as first reported by Jeremy Fowler of the Pioneer Press.
The deal apparently had been held up by the Vikings’ insistence on offset language that would allow the team to recoup some of his guarantee in the unlikely event that he becomes a bust and is cut before his contract gets done.
As it turned out, PFT has confirmed that the Vikings gave in and there was no offset language. The deal will be a four-year contract worth $19,770,598. The deal is fully guaranteed and includes a signing bonus of $12,818,620.

Braylon Edwards to the Seahawks?

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about veteran wide receiver Braylon Edwards, but he’s back on the radar as camps open around the NFL.
Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports that the Seahawks will have Edwards in for a workout. Edwards was released by the 49ers near the end of the 2011 season after he caught just 15 passes in nine games before being sidelined by a knee injury. There were rumors of interest from the Bengals and Jets over the course of the offseason, but they never amounted to much.

Donald Penn out a few weeks with calf injury

The Buccaneers veterans reported to camp on Thursday and one of them brought an injury along.
Left tackle Donald Penn told the Bucs a few days ago that he hurt his calf while preparing for camp. Coach Greg Schiano made the announcement Thursday and said that the team expects to be without Penn for a while while he recovers.
“Donald Penn has a strained calf. He informed me a while back and we got him back a little early to undergo treatment,” Schiano said, via OneBucSite.com. “How long he’ll be out? Maybe a couple of weeks.”

TTR's Game Changers - NFC East

Join us as TTR Game Changers takes a tour through all 32 teams, identifying one player from every squad that I believe has a great chance of being a game changer in 2012.  To see the full series click here.

New York Giants - The defending Super Bowl champions pretty much shocked everyone in 2011.  Not because we are surprised that they are a good team, but primarily because of the amount of injuries that hit this team at the beginning of the season.  Their secondary was decimated before the season even got rolling.  They prevailed, and that is reason to think they will be even better this year with Terrell Thomas back in the fold.  Yes they drafted Prince Amukamara last year, but I am not sold on the young man yet, and I think that if Thomas is able to stay healthy this season that he is on the field more than the Prince.  Thomas was just given a nice extension this offseason despite missing all of 2011.  People also tend to forget how productive he has been in recent years. In fact according to Pro Football Focus, in terms of fantasy football he was ranked 2nd and 1st in scoring in 2009 and 2010, respectively.  He has had plenty of time to rehab his injury, and should be a big contributor in 2012.

Dallas Cowboys -  The Cowboys have had time to settle into Rob Ryan's complex defensive scheme and we should expect them to emerge as one of the games best units in 2012.  One of the key players that I expect to emerge this season is the second year linebacker Bruce Carter.  Carter was a dynamic and explosive linebacker who played sideline to sideline at UNC, but his draft stock fell due to injury.  Watching his film at UNC you could see he was an instinctive player with speed, explosiveness and the fluidity that you need in today's NFL.  Unfortunately the injury cost him millions, but as a result he probably landed with a much better team than he might have otherwise.  Now, nearly two years removed from injury Carter is fully recovered and healthy and could be a major impact player in that Dallas defense, as he claws his way into the starting lineup.

Philadelphia Eagles - Last year the Eagles paid big money to lure Cullen Jenkins away from the Packers, and honestly I thought it was a bad move.  I saw him dominate the Lions, but believed it was because of the suspect lines they always had.  However, when he was able to play inside in Washburn's aggressive four man front, he showed flashes of brilliance.  With the health concerns still lingering over Mike Patterson, the Eagles will probably end up starting rookie Fletcher Cox.  PFF suggests that if this does indeed occur, that could allow Jenkins to shift to the left defensive tackle, allowing him more freedom as a pass rusher.  You add that to the fact that the  defensive ends in this scheme are monsters and you could find a lot of 1-on-1 situations for Jenkins.  In those situations, I put my money on him.

Washington Redskins - The run on defensive players stops, for now.  The Redskins have a lot of question marks on their offense.  To think that this thing is going to come together now that RG3 is in town is more than presumptuous, but there will be plenty of peaks and valleys for the 'Skins in 2012.  Questions are still lingering around the skill positions though.  Will it be Garcon and Moss starting at the wideouts positions?  Or will a healthy Leonard Hankerson and Josh Morgan steal the spot light?  I would have to say that Moss and Garcon will be the guys this year.  Moss has been a big contributor to a struggling offense for years, but is his age catching up with him?  Moss is in reportedly great shape, but I think that Pierre Garcon could be the more impactful player.  Garcon is only 25 years old and is entering the prime of his career, and despite not having Peyton Manning last season, he still posted the most productive season of his career.  With word that the Redskins are raving about him this offseason, expect Garcon to be the newest game changer in Washington, not named Robert Griffin III.

Charles Woodson opens camp at strong safety

Charles Woodson PicGetty Images
The Packers’ Wednesday release of safetyCharlie Peprah was a surprise. Peprah started 14 games at strong safety last season, and had five interceptions. He was due just $1 million in base salary.
But the move opened the door for Charles Woodson’s long-speculated position switch. Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin reports that Woodson opened Packers training camp Thursday at strong safety in the base defense. In Green Bay’s oft-used nickel package, Woodson dropped down to cover the slot receiver and M.D. Jennings entered the lineup at safety.

Ray Lewis shedding weight for changing game

As Jets jack-of-many-trades Tim Tebowgains weight to prepare for the additional punishment he’ll absorb this year, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis has opted to go lean.
Gantt points out in the one-liners that Lewis is lighter than 240 pounds.  So how much lighter?
Lewis won’t say.  He could be at 230 or less, and he looks noticeably thinner in a video posted at the Baltimore Sun website.

Morris Claiborne tested early in Cowboys camp

Morris+Claiborne+Dallas+Cowboys+Minicamp+dF_q9sOqlUNlGetty Images
The Cowboys have been waiting a long time to see what they got when they traded up to the sixth pick to select cornerback Morris Claiborne in April, so it’s not surprising they had no patience when they finally got Claiborne on the field.
Claiborne missed all of this spring’s OTAs and minicamps while he rehabbed after wrist surgery. He’s gotten a green light to get back to work and the Cowboys didn’t waste any time putting that green light to the test during a practice for rookies on Wednesday. On the first play of team drills, the Cowboys called a deep pass play on Claiborne’s side of the field. The ball fell incomplete, but the message was received.

Seahawks give Max Unger extension

Brad Biggs - National Football Post

The Seattle Seahawks have been busy getting deals done.
On the heels of the contract extension for defensive end Chris Clemons, the Seahawks have announced an extension for center Max Unger, who was entering the final year of his contract and is the only lineman that pre-dates the Pete Carroll era, according to Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times.

Devin Hester tried to help his cousin, who is wanted on murder charges

Brad Biggs - National Football Post
Chicago Bears wide receiver Devin Hester brought his cousin Antoinne Hester to the Chicago area to work at his football camp late last month just days before officials in Florida say he shot and killed a man.
Antoinne Robert Hester, 22, has been charged with murder and is being sought in Broward County, Fla., for the July 4 shooting death of a man in a car on Interstate 95. It’s a troubling family situation for Devin Hester, who told the Chicago Tribune he’s done what he can to help family members over the years, including having his cousins work at his football camp, that was held June 29-30.

Texans give Roy Williams a tryout

Roy WilliamsAP
Free agent receiver Roy Williams is finally drawing some interest.
Williams is in Houston for a tryout with the Texanson Thursday, his agent Ben Dogra told the Star-Telegram.
Williams was one of several well-known free agent receivers who found it hard to find any suitors this offseason. Others on that list include Braylon EdwardsPlaxico Burress and Terrell Owens.
But now Williams will get an opportunity to prove he can still play with the Texans, where he’d have a chance to be the No. 3 wide receiver behind starters Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter.
Last season Williams caught 37 passes for 507 yards and two touchdowns with the Bears. A 2004 first-round draft pick of the Lions, Williams was traded to the Cowboys in 2008 and was viewed as a disappointment in Dallas.

Josh Gordon admits he lied about failed drug test

josh-gordon-120713-wideAP
Shortly after the Browns selected him with a second-round pick in the supplemental draft, receiver Josh Gordon claimed he hadn’t failed a drug test during his brief stint at Utah. Gordon now admits he was lying when he said that.
Yeah, there was a failed test,” Gordon told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
