Matt Kalil gets Jared Allen cursing

Jared Allen, Matt Kalil, Christian PonderAP
Some rookies get a baptism by fire.  Vikings left tackle Matt Kalil has been thrown into the bowels of a blast furnace.
He’s regularly facing defensive end Jared Allen, the 22-sack bright spot on a generally bad defense in 2011.  Allen, who would be holding the single-season sack record but for Brett Favre’s hook-slide gimme for Michael Strahan in 2001, doesn’t get nearly the attention Allen deserves, because he plays for a team that has become an afterthought in the NFC North.
The “afterthought” status could change, if Kalil can play against opponents the way he performed against Allen on Tuesday.
Per Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com, Kalil “stonewalled” Allen on consecutive players, prompting Allen to curse loudly.
Cursing could lead to fighting, based on Allen’s recent comments from an appearance on NBC SportsTalk.  “Just don’t touch me,” Allen said. “I’m too old to deal with overzealous rookies right now.  Keep your hands out of my face, don’t grab my jersey and we won’t have to fist fight.”
Kalil’s brother, Panthers perennial Pro Bowl center Ryan, told PFT Live last week that Matt had been pestering Panthers left tackle Joran Gross for information on how to deal with Jared Allen.
Whatever Matt Kalil is doing, it’s apparently working.  And if he can make it work against Allen, Kalil likely can make it work against anyone.

Wade Phillips thinks J.J. Watt is a future Hall of Famer

JJ WattAP
Defensive end J.J. Watt closed last season with a flourish and now his defensive coordinator with the Texans is making bold statements about where Watt’s career can take him.
Wade Phillips sounded a bit like another son of a former NFL head coach when talking about Watt at Texans training camp. Rex Ryan would certainly appreciate Phillips putting Watt in the Pro Football Hall of Fame after just one year on the job.

Antonio Gates "burning" corners in practice

Oakland Raiders v San Diego ChargersGetty Images
Relative for him, Chargers tight end Antonio Gates has struggled the past two seasons, in terms of both durability and on-field effectiveness. Gates set out in the offseason to shed weight in hopes of improving his speed and quickness.
And so far in training camp, the weight loss appears to be paying on-field dividends.
“The best thing is, he can actually run,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stated on Inside Training Camp Live on Tuesday. “… He’s in shape. He looks skinny. He was burning cornerbacks left and right in practice. … He is feeling healthier now than he’s been in a couple of years.
“He is really looking like he’s primed for a big, big season.”
Following the offseason departure of Vincent Jackson, the Chargers will likely turn to Gates as their No. 1 option in the passing game. Healthy and in the best shape of his life, it’s hard not to like Gates’ chances of rediscovering elite form.

Titans get Kendall Wright's deal done

Kendall WrightAP
Tuesday started with Kendall Wright on the verge of a finalized contract with the Titans and it will end with him celebrating a deal.
Multiple sources are reporting that Wright and the Titans have agreed to terms on a four-year contract that is worth in the neighborhood of $8.2 million. We don’t have all the details of the contract regarding guarantees and offsets, but Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com reports that the Titans “made significant moves” to get the deal done right now. It’s not surprising that they felt some pressure to get Wright done sooner rather than later.

Bengals extend Marvin Lewis

Marvin Lewis, Brandon GheeGetty Images
Marvin Lewis might not be a big fan of Twitter, but he seems to like life as the head coach of the Bengals.
The Bengals announced Tuesday that they have come to terms on a contract extension with Lewis that will run through the 2014 season. Lewis became the longest-tenured coach in franchise history by leading the team for a ninth season in 2011 and he’d be just the 13th coach since the NFL-AFL merger to spend 12 years with the same team if he remains in charge through 2014.

Braylon Edwards signs with Seattle

San Francisco 49ers v Washington RedskinsGetty Images
The Miami Dolphins worked out free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards last week, but he was not immediately signed. Some loose reports suggested the Dolphins were still legitimately interested. That may have been the case, but Edwards chose to take his talents northwest instead.
Dave “Softy” Mahler of KJR Sports Radio in Seattle is reporting that Edwards will sign with the Seahawks.

Knowshon Moreno cleared for practice

Terry McCormick - National Football Post

Knowshon Moreno has been cleared to return to full team drills for the Denver Broncos, according to the Denver Post.
Moreno had surgery to repair a torn ACL on Dec. 1 and had been limited to just 7 on 7 non-contact drills through the early portion of training camp. Despite being cleared for full contact, Moreno isn't ready to say he is full go just yet.
"Every day I just want to try to do more, do more team things, get in there with the ones and get used to the speed again. Today was definitely a good day for that," Moreno said. "I'm not full go yet, but I'm getting closer."

Daryl Washington wants to stay in Arizona for a long time, Cardinals agree

Arizona Cardinals Training CampGetty Images
Cardinals third-year linebacker Daryl Washington is coming off a terrific second NFL season that saw him record 107 tackles, five sacks, and two interceptions in 14 starts. The 47th overall pick in the 2010 draft, Washington has developed into a long-term building block on Arizona’s defense.
But to keep Washington in the fold long term, the Cards are going to have to pay. G.M. Rod Graves sounds willing.
“He’s a very talented player,” Graves acknowledged, “and he has demonstrated that he’s the type of guy that we want in our program for the long term. We’re hoping we can get to a point where we can sit down and talk about extending our relationship with him. He certainly is one that we’re focused on doing that with.”

Tannehill turning heads in South Beach already

Ryan Tannehill, Pat DevlinAP
Dolphins first-round pick Ryan Tannehillmissed two days of camp due to a contract hangup. But the No. 8 overall draft pick maintains confidence that he’ll get a legitimate opportunity to win his team’s starting quarterback job.
The first step in upsetting veterans Matt Moore and David Garrard would be outplaying them on the practice field. And Tannehill is off to a promising start.

Laurinaitis in line to receive extension from Rams

James LaurinaitisAP
With defensive end Chris Long taken care of, the Rams have apparently turned their attention toward a new contract for linebackerJames Laurinaitis.
Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the team has begun talks with agent Tom Condon for the linebacker before he enters the final year of his deal.
“Tom mentioned that they’re talking, but I don’t follow that stuff,” Laurinaitis said. “I really try not to focus on that. I just go and play football and if anything happens, Tom will let me know.”

Jason Babin to miss 2-3 weeks with calf injury

Philadelphia Eagles v New York GiantsGetty Images
Eagles DE Jason Babin finally expelled his thermometer pill, allowing him to take an MRI on his strained calf Monday.
According to Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, the MRI showed a second degree strain of the calf that will keep Babin out of the lineup for two or three weeks. That’s a bit longer than the initial diagnosis of a week, but it shouldn’t greatly impact Babin’s readiness for the season.
It could impact his ability to play in the second and third preseason games, however. Those games are scheduled for August 20th and 24th, the outer edge of the period that Babin is expected to miss and it is always risky for a player to try for a quick return from a muscle strain that could get worse if the original injury hasn’t fully healed.
The good news on that front is that Babin probably doesn’t need much time to get himself ready to go for the regular season. He played all 16 games in this defense last season and his spot in the starting lineup is totally secure. The rotation behind him isn’t set, however, so the Eagles can use Babin’s absence to take extended looks at players like Brandon Graham as they try to set up their season-opening depth chart.

TTR's Game Changers - AFC South

Join us as TTR Game Changers takes a tour through all 32 teams, identifying one player from every squad that I believe has a great chance of being a game changer in 2012.  To see the full series click here.

Houston Texans - When Wade Philips came aboard in Houston, he did the unimaginable.  He took that miserable squad and turned them into a dominant defense.  Transforming a defense alone is hard, especially when shifting to a new philosophy.  When they made that shift, they wisely drafted Brooks Reed out of Arizona State.  In some scouting circles he was considered a poor man's Clay Matthews.  Well, poor or not, he played above expectations last year down the stretch as he got more playing time.  This year with Mario Williams gone, he will start opposite the emergent Connor Barwin, to help for one of the newest pass rushing duos in the NFL.  Barwin believes the sky is the limit for Reed, who is currently believed to be the strongest guy on the team after an amazing off season.  I expect Reed to build on his dominant post season performances  from the get go in 2012.  Reed and Barwin could surprise this year with 10 plus sacks each.

Tennessee Titans -  Maybe I am wrong, but I don't like what the Titans are doing.  I don't fully understand how they are trying to build this team.  It seems like each year they are letting go of players, while only pulling in a modicum of talent to replace them.  They do have some core players left on both sides of the ball, but it appears that it is becoming slim pickins.  This is a hard selection for me to make, because there are a few players that I go back and forth on.  I like Akeem Ayers potential, but I think he needs to develop a little more, and he may not have a lot of help on that side of the ball this season. On the opposite side of the ball, I think Nate Washington is going to be the go to guy this season due to Wright being a rookie and the unpredictable nature of Britt's availability.  Then I look at the possibility of Jake Locker, who played well above anyone's expectations last year in his limited opportunities.  I feel that if he makes it on the field, it opens up the running game as well as forces defense to handle passing situations differently, because of his running ability.  But, with all that said, Locker is still an unproven second year player, who may only get to play a few games this season.  So with that, I have to say that a motivated Chris Johnson will the the most impactful player on the Titans squad in 2012.  He got the money he wanted, but it cost him production and effectiveness last season. He was not in game shape, nor did he fully grasp the new offense the way he needed to.  This year there are no excuses.  Plus I think, or at least I hope he was a little embarrassed about his Top 100 ranking by his peers.

Indianapolis Colts - Things are going to be ugly in Indianapolis this year, but unlike in Jacksonville, at least the Colts are going in the right direction.  The defense is changing over to Chuck Pagano's 3-4 base, and even with Freeney and Mathis' talents, this transition could take a while.  I do expect them to get comfortable in their new roles, but it could be several weeks into the season before that happens.  That is the only reason why I don't select Dwight Freeney here.  So instead I feel forced to look on the other side of the ball, and I don't see much that I like.  Reggie Wayne is still capable of being one of the games most productive players, but he is not as explosive as he once was.  Donald Brown will be in the backfield, and I am not sure that he has done anything since he left UConn.  The next option is Coby Fleener, but quite frankly he probably won't scare anyone.  So the only choice that remains is Andrew Luck.  Luck has more pressure on him to succeed than probably any other single draft pick in the last 20 or so years, but he seems like it is just part of the job description.  While he will have his ups and downs this season like all rookie quarterbacks do, I think he will carry this team farther than anyone would think possible in just his rookie season.  Luck will have a better rookie season than Peyton Manning, and this fan base will have something to cheer about for a long time.

Jacksonville Jaguars - I have kinda pulled for the Jaguars since they came into the league, but I can't say that I have been a fan of the way the organization has been run for a long time.  Their personnel and coaching decisions have been awful for a long time.  Then you add in the fact that MJD is probably not going to play at all this year without a new contract, and this team goes from bad to worse.  There are already reports out of camp that Gabbert is spending more time scrambling than throwing passes because his receivers can't get open, and Justin Blackmon still isn't in camp.  So with this in mind, I look to 5th year defensive end Jeremy Mincey to be have the largest impact on the Jaguars in 2012.  Mincey came on strong last year with his best season as a pro, registering 8 sacks.  This year he will have a good chance at having a double digit sack season and being a real impact player for this team.  I think this team will have plenty of struggles, but Mincey should be one of the brightest spots.

Clady and the Broncos agree to halt contract talks till 2013

Ryan CladyAP
Broncos tackle Ryan Clady won’t be getting a contract extension anytime soon.
Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that Clady and the Broncos have mutually decided to shelve talk about a new contract until after the 2012 season. Clady will make $3.5 million this season, the final year of his five-year rookie pact.
The Broncos reportedly offered Clady a five-year, $50 million deal with $28 million guaranteed earlier this month, a deal that would have made him one of the five best-paid tackles in football. Rejecting it would suggest that Clady is shooting for a bigger, Joe Thomas-sized number as a free agent after this season. Thomas’ deal with the Browns averages out at more than $11.5 million per season.

Kevin Kolb listed as No.1 quarterback, suffers thigh bruise

Kevin KolbAP
The good news for Kevin Kolb is that when the Cardinals put out their first official depth chart of the 2012 season today, he was the No. 1 quarterback, ahead of John Skelton. The bad news is that hours later, Kolb had to leave practice early with a bruised thigh.
The thigh injury is not believed to be anything serious, but it points to a consistent problem in Kolb’s career: When he’s named a starting quarterback, it’s just a matter of time before he gets hurt. Today it was just a matter of hours.
