Seahawks cut Antonio Bryant

Seahawks Camp FootballAP
It’s not an Olympic event.  But if it were, Antonio Bryant would have gotten the silver medal in the Battle of the Washed-Up Receivers.
Hooray?
The Seahawks have released Bryant, according to Curtis Crabtree of KJR radio.
Bryant signed with the Seahawks on July 26, after a June minicamp tryout in which he wasn’t deemed to be in football shape.
The veteran last played in 2009.  A knee injury wiped out his short time with the Bengals during training camp in 2010, and he was out of football last season.
For now, gold medalist Braylon Edwards survives in the role made famous by Mike Williams under Pete Carroll.
Since Bryant is a vested veteran, he immediately becomes a free agent.  Just like he was for two years before the Seahawks came calling.

Andy Reid's son Garret found dead at training camp

Eagles G.M. Howie Roseman announced moments ago that Garrett Reid, the eldest son of Eagles coach Andy Reid, was found dead at training camp on Sunday morning.
“He’s been strong for us, we’re going to be strong for him right now,” Roseman said.
Lehigh University Chief of Police Edward Shupp confirmed that Garrett Reid’s body was found in his dorm room at training camp, following a 911 call placed at 7:20 a.m. ET.  Shupp added that at this point there is no evidence of foul play.  A member of the coroner’s office said that an investigation is ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to Coach Reid, his family, the players, the coaches, and all members of the Eagles organization.

Cliff Avril reports to Lions camp

Cliff AvrilAP
Defensive end Cliff Avril’s exile from the Lions has come to an end.
Avril has been away from the Lions since the team placed the franchise tag on him in February as he first tried to negotiate a long-term contract with the team and then moved on to staying away from the start of camp after not being able to come to terms on one. Avril knew he would have to sign his $10.6 million contract eventually as he’s barred from signing a longer deal until after this season and eventually came on Sunday. Avril sent out a Twitter message announcing his return to work:
Tim Twentyman of the Lions’ website confirms that Avril has reported for work on Sunday morning, one day after defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham made it clear that he was itching to get the defensive end into camp. Now Avril is back and the Lions can step up their efforts to build a strong defensive line that will have to cover for some weaker spots elsewhere on the defense.
Avril, who had 11 sacks last season, will be a big part of that effort.

Miles Austin injures hamstring again this year

Miles AustinAP
Where have you gone, Laurent Robinson?
Cowboys receiver Miles Austin, who suffered a hamstring injury during the 2011 preseason that plagued him all year long, has another hamstring injury, according to DallasCowboys.com.
Executive V.P. Stephen Jones says he isn’t worried about the situation, even though Austin missed six games last year with hamstring issues.
Overall, Jones should be worried.  A full 19 players are injured, in some degree or another.

Greg Childs potentially lost for the season

Minnesota Vikings MinicampGetty Images
Vikings rookie wide receiver Greg Childs was carted off the field with a leg injury during Saturday’s training camp practice. It appears the injury will be year-ending.
Tom Pelissero of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities reports that Childs suffered a “significant” injury to both knees and is “almost surely” done for the season. Considered a potential future first-round pick before rupturing his patellar tendon as a junior at Arkansas, Childs’ draft stock plummeted playing with a hitch in his gait as a senior. He was available to the Vikings in April’s fourth round.
Per Pelissero, the early fear is that Childs tore both patellar tendons.
The Vikings were hoping Childs would emerge as their starting split end early in the season, during Jerome Simpson’s three-game suspension. They will have to look elsewhere now. Expect G.M. Rick Spielman to scour the free-agent and trade markets at receiver this week.
