Dwayne Bowe agrees to report to Chiefs camp

Hours before the Chiefs open their preseason schedule at Arrowhead Stadium, reports out of Kansas City say that unsigned franchise player Dwayne Bowe is about to rejoin the team.
KMBC 9 News in Kansas City is reporting that Bowe has reached an agreement with the Chiefs, and that he was flying to Kansas City on Friday afternoon.
Because Bowe and the Chiefs did not reach an agreement before the July 16 deadline for franchise players to sign long-term contracts, he can now only sign a one-year deal with the Chiefs. So he has presumably decided to sign his franchise tender, which guarantees him a 2012 salary of $9.5 million. He’ll then become an unrestricted free agent again in March, or get franchised again with a tender amount of $11.4 million.
The Chiefs’ No. 1 receiver, Bowe caught 81 passes for 1,159 yards and five touchdowns last season.

David Garrard will require surgery for knee injury

The Miami Dolphins’ quarterback competition has reportedly undergone a significant shakeup.
David Garrard, who’s currently listed as the No. 1 quarterback on Miami’s depth chart, recently underwent knee surgery, according toSean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times. That comes as a total surprise, and apparently surprises the media that covers the Dolphins every day. Miami Herald Dolphins beat writer Adam Beasley wrote on Twitter that Garrard didn’t miss any practices that have been open to the public.

Colts GM: Luck as advertised, but he isn't Peyton

Andrew Luck PicGetty Images
Andrew Luck won’t make his preseason debut until Sunday, but Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson has already seen enough to feel confident that the No. 1 overall pick was well spent.
Asked what he has learned about Luck in training camp, Grigson channeled Dennis Green in his answer, saying, “That he really is what we thought he was.”
Grigson said he’s excited about seeing Luck in live game action, because he’s already seen just in practice what a competitor Luck is.
“We just have to get him in front of some other folks and see how he responds,” Grigson said. “Because, like I’ve said, the one thing that you can tell from his body language, from how he reacts on the field, from how he does things, he’s his harshest critic. Nobody is going to be able to push his buttons as hard as he pushes his own buttons. That’s evident to me. He wants to be great. He absolutely hates incompletions. You can see it on his face. He wants to complete every pass, and that’s good to see.”
However, Grigson put the brakes on when a reporter asked if Luck is reminiscent of Peyton Manning.
“No. I wouldn’t say he reminds me of Peyton,” Grigson said. “One is a great one that’s proven himself. Andrew’s yet to prove himself, has a long way to go. He knows that.”
The Colts will avoid the Manning comparisons as much as they can, but Luck will always be compared to Manning. And the early indications are that the folks in Indianapolis believe Luck will eventually prove himself worthy of those comparisons. A franchise quarterback for a decade or more to come is who the Colts think Luck is.

Peyton Manning feels good about his Broncos debut

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning only threw seven passes in Thursday night’s preseason debut against the Bears, but those were seven more passes than he had thrown in live game action in the last year and a half, and Manning was pleased with the experience.
“Obviously it’s good to go against a different opponent and good to get out — it’s been a while for me, getting back out there on the field in a real game-like atmosphere, even though it’s preseason,” Manning said afterward. “So it felt good to get out there and we can build on this.”

Ryan Matthews breaks clavicle

Ryan MathewsAP
When the Chargers declared an intention to convert running back Ryan Mathews into a workhorse this season, many wondered whether he’d stay healthy.
Few imagined that he’d be injured so quickly.
The team has announced that Mathews has a broken clavicle, and that he’ll miss the next four-to-six weeks.
Mathews will have surgery on Friday.
The injury bumps up the likes of Ronnie BrownJackie BattleCurtis BrinkleyMichael Hayes, and Edwin Baker.
The Chargers also could try to sign an available veteran, like Cedric Benson.  Or the Chargers can wait for the coming roster cuts.  Or the Chargers can swing a trade with a team that believes it has more running backs than it needs.
Or the Chargers can just pass the ball more.
