Giants lose Shaun Rogers for the season

NFL.com Wire Reports
New York Giants defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is being treated for a blood clot in his left calf.
Rogers experienced swelling in his lower leg after playing in the preseason opener Friday. He missed practice Sunday and Monday. The Giants announced Tuesday that the 12-year veteran was seen by orthopedic surgeon Russell Warren and vascular surgeon John Karwowaki on Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
The Super Bowl champions did not say how long he would be sidelined, but New Jersey Devils defenseman Henrik Tallinder missed a couple of months this past NHL season after developing a blood clot in his leg.
The Giants also said defensive tackle Martin Parker has a herniated disc in his back that will require surgery, and that fellow defensive tackle Marvin Austin is being seen by doctors in New York for a back problem.
Parker was hurt in Friday's game. Austin practiced Monday.
Defensive end Justin Trattou, who has been sidelined since early in training camp at the University at Albany with ankle and heel injuries, was examined by ankle specialist Dr. David Levine and is not expected back on the field for a couple of weeks.
UPDATE: Giants coach Tom Coughlin has said that Rogers' injury is season ending and that it is "very sad," according to Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Cameron Wake okay after car accident

Cameron WakeAP
Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake didn’t practice on Tuesday, one day after he was involved in a car accident.
According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Wake has no visible injuries as a result of the accident, but his car was totaled when he hit another car at an intersection on Monday afternoon. Wake’s BMW crashed into a Lexus that was headed in the other direction and trying to make a left turn at an intersection.
The driver of the other car was cited for impeding Wake’s right of way. Police say that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
Wake watched the first part of practice from the field and then went back into the team’s facility. It’s unknown if Wake will play on Friday against the Panthers at this point and rookie Olivier Vernon would likely see a bump in playing time if Wake is unable to play in the team’s second preseason game.

Olympic sprinter Jeff Demps now turns his focus to the NFL

Olympics Day 14 - AthleticsGetty Images
After finishing his college career as a Florida running back in January, Jeff Demps said that he wasn’t interested in being selected in the NFL draft, because he wanted to put all of his focus on trying to qualify for the Olympics. That decision worked well for Demps, who made it to London and won a silver medal as part of the American 4×100-meter relay team.
With that goal behind him, Demps now wants to make it in the NFL.

No concussion for Nnamdi Asomugha

Nnamdi AsomughaAP
The news from Eagles camp is that cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha’s collision with safetyNate Allen looked worse than it felt.
Asomugha did wind up with a busted lip and sore neck after running into his secondary mate, but the Eagles say that he has no symptoms of a concussion after being evaluated by the team’s medical staff.
Despite the scary scene on Monday, Allen said that there won’t be much of an attempt to avoidthese kinds of collisions in the future.
“I saw him, but I figured when you’re out there, you’re just playing fast and things happen; you collide sometimes,” Allen said, via Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “But you’ve got to go for the ball. You can’t dodge each other.”
Asomugha isn’t with the Eagles at their morning walkthrough Tuesday, according to Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, and his status for the afternoon practice is unknown at this point. Even without a concussion, you’d imagine the Eagles are going to proceed cautiously with Asomugha’s return to the field after dodging such a big bullet.

Super Bowl chance led Cedric Benson to choose Packers over Lions and Raiders

NFL.com Wire Reports

Cedric Benson knows there's an expiration date stamped on any NFL player and that it seems to come sooner for running backs than anyone else.
"I think I've got plenty," Benson said Monday. "I still feel good. I'm still loose, I diet well and I train well and do the best I can to contribute to the longevity of my career as best I know how. And I think I've got plenty of years left. I feel great."Benson insists he has a lot left to give the Green Bay Packersdespite carrying the ball more than 1,500 times over the past seven NFL seasons.
The Packers signed the free-agent running back Sunday, hoping to add depth and productivity at a position that is being stretched thin by injuries just a few weeks into training camp.
Benson told FOXSportsWisconsin.com the Detroit Lions and Oakland Raiders both attempted to sign him before the Packers.

Dontari Poe the Chiefs' third-best nose tackle

Dontari Poe, Anthony PleasantAP
When a team takes a player with the 11th pick in the NFL draft, that team is usually hoping that player can step in and start immediately. But the Chiefs selected nose tackle Dontari Poe with the 11th pick in this year’s draft, and not only is Poe not currently a starter, he may not even be second string.
The Kansas City Star reports that the real competition at nose tackle in Chiefs camp is between Anthony Toribio, who’s currently the starter, and Jerrell Powe, a 2011 sixth-round pick who played in only one game as a rookie but has looked good in camp and recorded a sack in the preseason opener.

Hakeem Nicks off the PUP list

Brad Biggs - National Football Post
Hakeem Nicks has maintained all along he will be ready before the start of the regular season.
The New York Giants wide receiver looks like he is on the mark. The Giants promoted Nicks from the physically unable to perform list today, announcing that he has passed his physical, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.
That means Nicks can resume practicing with the club. He has been sidelined since suffering a foot injury in spring that required surgery. Whether or not Nicks will have a role in preseason action remains to be seen. The Giants have 3 ½ weeks until they open the season at home against the Dallas Cowboys. That gives Nicks plenty of time to make sure he’s in football shape.

Chad Johnson was convicted of domestic battery in 2000

Chad JohnsonAP
During his 12 years in the NFL, Chad Johnson has cultivated an image of a troublemaker, but a playful one — a class clown, not a bully. So when Johnson was arrested over the weekend for domestic violence, it seemed out of character.
But it may have been less out of character than we realized: Johnson already has a domestic battery conviction on his record, as he was arrested for hitting his girlfriend in 2000 and later pleaded no contest, according to TMZ.
