Saturday one-liners

The Jets are still thinking about the day that the defense had 99 problems and the ability to tackle Victor Cruz wasn’t one.
Dolphins WR Roberto Wallace, despite starting on Friday night, lived up to his “Ankle Weights” nickname when trying to get separation.
Bills WR Donald Jones may have gotten some separation from T.J. Graham and Derek Haganfor the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.
Former Pats CB Ty Law thinks that the team’s current corners need to ignore what people are saying in order to develop the right kind of swagger.
Ravens RB Ray Rice is tired of simply making it to the playoffs.
When the Bengals cut WR Jordan Shipley, QB Andy Dalton saw a close friend waived for the first time.
Steelers QB Jerrod Johnson, who played the full second half of the preseason opener, could get even more reps against the Colts on Sunday night.
Texans coach Gark Kubiak sees a lot of himself in rookie QB Case Keenum(except, as Kubiak points out, he’s taller than Keenum).
The Jaguars haven’t said whether LT Eugene Monroe has a concussion.  (Maybe he simply has “concussion-like symptoms.”)
Colts P Pat McAfee, who also kicked at West Virginia, broke out the boom stick for a 58-yard field goal in practice on Friday.
After another slow start on Friday night, Titans RB Chris Johnson began to look like his old self.
Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe immediately passed his conditioning test upon signing his franchise tender and joining the team.
Between catching passes from QB Peyton Manning and running routes against CB Champ Bailey, WR Eric Decker could be on his way to stardom.
Raiders CB Ron Bartell says his team has the best defensive line in the league.  (Kevin Kolb hopes that’s the truth.)
Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst will see his first game action since re-signing with the team after two seasons in Seattle.
Giants C Kevin Baas is feeling more comfortable in his second season with the team.
Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne says he’ll “play the whole game” tonight against the Chargers if the coaches allow it.  (He likely says that in part because he knows they’ll never allow it.)
After looking good in training camp, Redskins WR Anthony Armstrong is hoping to rebound from a shoulder injury and make an impact in the team’s second preseason game.
Former Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz says LT J’Marcus Webb will get better if he gets more confident.
The Packers will make a decision on QB Graham Harrell based on all four preseason games.  (The most recent of those preseason games resulted in a passer rating of 26.4.)
Lions coach Jim Schwartz says the team needs “better players” on special teams; “You can do all the drills you want, but if a guy can’t make a play, he can’t make a play,” Schwartz said.  “We got to find guys who can kickoff cover and punt cover.  We were poor in those areas.”
Vikings RB Toby Gerhart looks the part as a starting tailback, even if his role is temporary.
Bucs LT Donald Penn is expected to resume practicing on Monday.
Saints fans recently served as guinea pigs for a test of the honor system.
The Panthers’ offensive line looked much better in the second preseason game.  (Of course, that may have something to do with the fact that the Dolphins’ front seven isn’t as good as the Texans’ front seven.)
The Falcons view Jacquizz Rodgers as a three-down tailback.  (Michael Turner wants an explanation.)
Six days after a 38-3 loss to the Colts, Rams coach Jeff Fisher has a simple goal for tonight’s preseason game against the Chiefs:  Get better in every area.
Cardinals RB Ryan Williams was anxious to make his return to the field on Friday night; “I can’t even lie, I was so nervous,” Williams said. “I felt like I was six years old again playing Pop Warner.”
Seahawks LT Russell Okung has had a quiet camp, and he is happy about that.
49ers WR Ted Ginn is happy he can put the “Jr.” on the back of his jersey, something that he has wanted to do “for a long time” — and that RG3 had the juice to persuade the league to allow.

Shooting outside Raiders-Cardinals game

NFL.com
A fight turned into a shooting outside Friday night's Oakland Raiders-Arizona Cardinals game in Glendale, Ariz., the Arizona Republic reported.
The newspaper said a man was shot in the stadium's northwest parking lot after a fight broke out during the third quarter of Arizona's 31-27 victory over the Raiders. Police spokeswoman Tracey Breeden said the victim was initially hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, but later was reported to be in stable condition.
The alleged shooter was arrested.

LeGarrette Blount injures groin against Dolphins

LeGarrette BlountAP
Buccaneers running back LeGarrette Blount left Friday night’s preseason game after his leg bent underneath him in an ugly way, but there was good news after the game: Blount should be fine.
Although it looked like Blount’s knee may have been injured when he was hit, Bucs coach Greg Schiano said Blount’s knee was fine, and that a strained groin was the only issue.

Tommy Kelly on Kevin Kolb: "That boy's scared"

Kevin Kolb, Tommy KellyAP
Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb found it difficult to do much on Friday night to make his case for the starting job.  After all, it’s hard to throw when being constantly harassed by the Raiders defense.
In the end, Kolb had as many sacks as completions:  three.
After a crunching collision between multiple Raiders and Kolb behind the line of scrimmage early in the second quarter, defensive lineman Tommy Kellysaid as he made it to the sideline, “That boy’s scared,” according to the Raiders TV broadcast being streamed through NFL.com’s Preseason Live package.
Kolb completed three of six passes for 22 yards, leading the Cardinals on a seven-play, 41-yard touchdown drive.  Kolb’s other scoring drive came via a field goal scored after an interception return by Kerry Rhodes put the ball deep in Oakland territory.  Arizona lost nine yards in three plays before the kick.
It seems like it’s only a matter of time before Kolb loses the starting job.

Locker and Johnson have up-and-down start

Jake Locker, Chris JohnsonAP
Jake Locker’s first start with the Titans did not begin smoothly, but Locker eventually shook things off and marched Tennessee downfield on an impressive touchdown drive.
Locker, the second-year quarterback who is getting an opportunity to show what he can do with the first-string offense, struggled early on against the Buccaneers. And running back Chris Johnson struggled as well.

Tannehill uninspiring in starting debut

Ryan TannehillAP
If this was quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s test drive, he hit a few potholes, but was generally able to get the car back to the dealership in one piece.
The Dolphins rookie, in his first opportunity with the starting offense had a mixed bag of a debut, but didn’t necessarily embarrass himself in a half of work. Mostly, he looked like a guy who could use some help.
